Weird issue at starting box in NJ can't make sense of it

Person I was going to play with had contact with Covid person so cancelled.
So I was a single and starter tried to put me with a guy his wife and teenage son. Baw was having none of it. He goes I am with my wife you understand why I don't want another gentleman with us. I can't figure out his concern lol he just keep say I am with my wife.
In NJ if you aren't 4 you pretty much expect to get paired with stranger.
Not sure if this is an OT thread just thought it was weird and would share.

I mean it just seems like the dude wants to hang out with his family. I don’t really see the issue.

Extremely focused on another gentlemen with my wife
I in general have no issue but buy the foursome then. Course is so backed up they need groups going in 4s

Weird. I saw this issue once at a course. The twosome in front of us got paired with another twosome and were flabbergasted. He kept telling the pro shop guy that he made the reservation and didn’t understand why they would reserve another group at the same time, like he was getting put out.
What made it super awkward is the twosome that was supposed to play with him were high school kids and you could tell they were very uncomfortable about the situation. Luckily we only had two in our group so I stepped in and said they could just play with us because I understand the rules and also would never act like a jackass in front of two kids.
Guy gave me a mean mug but didn’t go any further since he got what he wanted.

If I was with my wife and son, I would rather not have a 4th either. Would just like the family time with no strangers.
I don't like people anyway. I have no problem telling people I don't want to play with them. I'll more than likely never see the person again in my life, so who cares...
I wouldn't have used the excuse this guy did.

It's possible his wife is terrible at golf or has shitty etiquette and was trying to do you a favor without throwing her under the bus.
