switching from players to game improvement?
Posted by donRANDOMnumbers on 9/27/19 at 3:20 pm10
been playing a set of mizuno muscle backs for about 10 years. good clubs, haven't had a reason to switch... until maybe now.
kids and life have taken time from golf. i am hoping to start getting in some rounds again. played recently and a buddy of mine had just picked up a set of Callaway Rogue's. i grab his 7 iron, which is much bigger and clunkier than the mizuno, but frankly much easier to hit. almost as if i couldn't miss with it, and it bombed. (it was not the X, just the regular rogue)
started thinking is it worth working with player type irons at this point, or should i consider switching to some game improvement types.
what all are you playing?
have you experienced making a switch from a players irons to an easier stick?

I played some Mizuno muscle backs for a couple years. I'm in the same position as you in terms of how much I play. I love how the ball comes off the face of the MBs, it is just a good looking ball flight. But I moved off the MBs to the CBs. So not super game improvement, but a little more forgiving than true blades. It feels like I'm cheating in the few rounds I have in the CBs.

Because of the back, I don't pound range balls anymore.
Take a look at the Ping G410 irons. Just as forgiving as the Rogues but a more compact and cleaner look.
I switched from the Rogues to the Ping 410 irons and couldn't be happier.

I game the p790s. I say play with what you hit the best regardless of your skill level...unless you are pro level.

I went from Apex Pros to Srixon 565s. I can’t ever imagine getting another set of clubs. The extra forgiveness is awesome.
I can’t hit those Rogues and the like. I end up skying the ball, and I’m already a highball hitter.

Tell me some more about those 790s. Saw them today at the store and they felt pretty good.

I have been playing titleist AP1s for 5 years, and I don’t strike them that well. Maybe I just suck, but I think I need more forgiving clubs. Suggestions?

Don’t do it.
I stopped playing for a few years - got some game improvement irons when climbing back into the game - and I could never get dialed in with distances - A perfect strike was 15 yards too long - a nice strike was 10 yards to long - no spin on the greens - or the spin was not reliable.
Starting playing again on the reg and playing with mizzuno 919 JPX tours - best damn decision.
The srixons are pure as well

i have MP64s right now. looking at the JPX as an option so i don't go TOTALLY game improvement.
eta: looks like the JPX Tour is similiar to the old MP60s line. so practically the same iron as i have now.

They are hot like the M2s but with a better look to them.

liking the idea of the hot metal or forged JPX right now. still give me the mizuno look and feel i'm used too, but a little easier to miss.

My ego was the hardest thing to overcome when the time came for me. I used to play 6 days a week and I HAD to play blades. Looking back I don’t really know why I just had to play them, but I wish I had even bothered to hit a forged cavity back. I quit golf for 2 years when I started working and when I started playing again I realized I needed the forgiveness more than the ability to work the ball. I went to ap2’s and it’s the best decision I ever made. I had 4 sets of Mizuno blades (29,37,32,custom fit 33’s) and the ap2’s gained about 7 yards on each club and I saw no significant loss in feel or workability. I will say the butter feel of a perfect strike with a Mizuno is the best feeling iron I’ve ever hit but the ap2’s aren’t far behind. I’ll take the result over the feel any day. Highly doubt you will regret the decision

Hot metal 919 Pro’s are great, had a set for a week or two and went back to my srixon’s, the Srixon feel is hard to beat

I’m essentially in the same boat.
Just trying to figure out how far to move along the spectrum.

This will be my second summer golfing seriously, playing some 2007s Cleveland CG golds that a friend sold me for $100, hitting in the 90s pretty consistently with a round in the 80s every now and then. Keep in mind I've been playing about 3-4x per week and really getting after it practicing so no BS on the scores, game has come fairly naturally being decently coordinated/athletic with lots of baseball through HS.
Biggest issue is as a poster mentioned above, Hitting it pure I'm usually 10-15 yards long and the ball flies all over the place on the greens.
Looking at the JPX 919s but can't really decide between the Forged or the Hot Metal.
Kind of worried the hot metal will be like what I have now. I've hit them all indoors and really liked them but hard to say on the actual green play and workability.
What do ya'll say? Demo them or what?
