I have space for one more club and my current setup tops out at 58*. I find that a couple times each round I'm having to open the club face around the green to get the trajectory I want. About a 1/4 of the time, I mess the shot up (blade it on a tight lie or get too far under it on a fluffy lie).

Seems like all the discussions I read online have guys in it losing their shite when anyone suggests bagging anything higher than a 60, as if adding 2-4 more degrees turns the golf club upside down or something.

What makes a 62+* wedge so difficult to use? How can it not be easier to take a normal shot with a 64 vs opening a 58?

Part two of this question - since I'm looking to get a super lob wedge just for those pitch shots around the green, should I opt for the 64 over the 62?

I have a 58 and a 60 I can carry when I don't neither either my 3H or 4i. The 60 I always keep in there but the 58 has more bounce and is much better on the pitch shots and runners. You can get a 60 bent, but I don't think you need to add the loft if the bounce is low like an 8.

Just like it is easier to chip with a 56 than a 60.

I bent a 60 to a 64 for funsies in college. I used it a decent bit just messing around. But if I had been playing for money, I can think of 1 shot in 10 rounds where that was the right club.

I honestly don't even feel most people need to chip with a 60. If you aren't a single digit handicap or you don't have to carry a bunker on your chip, a PW is probably the best option, imo. Big fan of the putter from off the green.

The two courses I play the most have relatively small greens, a few of them are both small and elevated, and often have tight pin placements. If I tried to use only a PW on these courses it would be a disaster.

I never thought to carry a 60 until I started playing a course where missing a green short almost always means flop or putt, and good luck stopping anything on the green if you're long. It's probably my most used club besides my putter.

I have a 72 that I purchased as a fun club but now it has a home in my bag. I use it around the green and when I need to go straight up and down immediately.

I carried a 62 cleveland for years. Never found it very useful.

IMO, Most of the time if you have left yourself a shot that truly requires a 62 or higher loft, you aren't likely to get up and down anyway.

I will say though, I played spinners out of the sand with a low bounce 62 and could hit some pretty cool looking shots.

Now I carry a 52 and 56 though.

This says to me you're technique on pitch shots needs work. There are very few shots where you legit need that kind of loft. Work on holding your hinge and hitting through the shots with speed to get more spin. I use my 54 way more than my 57.

pitch shots
I use my 54 for those... now.

Much easier to control distance when you're not worried about the strike and you can swing smoothly.

So after reading this thread and during play yesterday staying attentive to my need for anything higher than a 58, I decided to go in the other direction to fill out my bag. Picked up a 16* Adams Tight Lies fairway wood, 41.5 inch. I tossed my Ping G10 43 inch 15.5 3 wood because I couldn't hit it off the deck to save my life. Been using an 18 degree hybrid for long fairway shots but need a little more umph. Supposedly the Adams wood is "easy" to hit from any lie.
