Over-sized grips

I have a friend that I play golf with a few times per year who just had over-sized grips put on his irons. He hits a natural draw/hook, and he went with these grips to straighten his shot out. He is a small guy, so definitely doesn't need them due to hand size, but it seems to be working for him. Has anyone else tried this?
I hit a draw/hook, too, so wondering if it is worth a shot or just a fluke.

Helps keep you from rolling your wrists over causing the ball to hook.

I think Rick Sheilds did a video about your subject. He didn't see much difference in the results if I remember correctly. It's possible your friend just ins't gripping the club as hard and his right hand is more relaxed in the swing. By the same token, I am a natural fader of the ball and mid-sized grips have activated my right hand more.

I said similar to your friend and I got smaller grips to be able to weaken my grip and put it more in my fingers. I would bet if he's a small guy he has a str9ng right hand causing his draw because his hands aren't big enough to grip it properly

He does have a strong right hand, stronger than mine. We have a golf weekend planned down at Myrtle Beach for the last weekend in February, so I am curious to see how this change has panned out for him.
All of your responses make sense, and I am definitely going to look up the video on the subject.

I put 2 extra wraps on mine. Don't need the full +4, but it does help to lower hand action a touch

Exactly
Go with extra wraps
I tried a large grip and immediately regretted it.

I believe the modern theory of using oversized grips is misunderstood and incorrect.
Mechanically, clubs with larger grips are easier to control for the average golfer. More control of the club due to larger grips allows the average golfer to control ball flight better. A smaller degree of shaft rotation with large grips causes a greater degree of rotation of the club face than with the smaller grips.
Less rotation with calmer hands leads to straighter, more consistent and predictable ball flight.
I believe the closing of the club face and draw / hook rotation imparted on the ball with small grips is due to a lack of or loss of club control causing overactive and tight hands which lead to the dreaded hook ball flight and/or a loss of consistent ball flight.
Larger grips allow for more control of the club with relaxed hands and arms which deliver more consistent ball flight and shot shaping.
I have switched to oversized grips on all my clubs and hit the ball consistently straighter than with regular size grips.
Overthinking? Maybe, but it works for me and dropped my handicap from 19 to 11.
Consistently scoring in the low 80’s is a lot more fun than scrambling to break 90 :)

^^ I agree with all of that. My hands are way more relaxed than when I was holding the standard grips. I’m hitting it WAY better. Now I just need to do it all in one round

I have some arthritis in my hands,
It helps.

You are so right Coach, it’s a thing of beauty and wonderment when it all comes together physically and mentally. We just need to get out of our own way.
Case in point: as I stated earlier, I can consistently score in the low 80s after switching to jumbo grips. My goals switched to breaking 80 and a single digit handicap.
Many times I have gotten to the 18th tee box needing a par to break 80. I overthink it, tighten up and double it for a 81, SOB!!!
It all came together for me on a very hilly course I walked on to and had never played before. I got paired up with a couple of older retired regulars on the course. They quickly became my “caddies” shortly after introducing myself. They would tell me where to hit the ball and what to look out for on blind shots.
Long story short; their guidance and me simply picturing the shot, relaxing mentally and physically, trusting their advice and my swing to execute the shot led to breaking 80 for the first time with a score of 75 with birdies on the first three holes!
I have the score card somewhere in the house, that both of my “caddies” signed over great conversation and a couple of cold beers after the round. on my tab of course :)

I was always told the large grips will claim the hands and keep from over rotating. I’m not sure that’s true in my case. I ordered my new Mizuno’s with MCC Plus4’s just to try and I really don’t like them as they don’t sit down in my fingers like my old Grip Master leather wraps that I’ve played with for the last 10 years or so. I’ll be pulling the MCC before long.

OP, I purchased a used set with some oversized grips. I would hit them with less movement on the ball, however, whenever my draw would sneak in, it was almost unplayable. I'm talking wayyyyy left. Went back to regular sized and learned to love the draw.

Thanks for the replies. I put an oversized grip on my 3-iron this week to test out. One of the courses I play frequently requires a 3-iron on three different doglegs. I haven't tested it out yet, but I plan to Saturday. If I like the feel, I may have all of them done.

In my first years of playing, I played oversized Lamkin grips to quiet hand action, like many have said.
Now, I play midsize grips on all clubs and will continue to do so.

I always thought that regular grips felt small but I have big hands. The midsize Winn dritac grips felt great and I’ve never turned back. Always feels weird when I buy a new wedge and play it before putting on a new grip. I have no idea if it changes anything technically

I was told by a Pro that the tighter you grip your clubs, the more distance you lose. Relax your hands to the point you are holding a bird, but not squeezing his guts out. I have played the oversized grips for years and found that I have more distance due to the relaxed hands. Everybody is different though. I currently have mid size grips on my clubs.

Save your money on the new grips because they will take some time getting use to.
