McDowell flew from Paris’ Charles de Gaulle airport to Manchester on Sunday night ahead of Tuesday’s qualifier for The Open at St. Annes, something he needed to do well in to secure his place in the tournament. However, there was just one problem: his clubs didn’t show up.

One user asked McDowell why he simply didn’t rent clubs ahead of Tuesday’s qualifier, which is a totally fair question. However, as McDowell quickly explained, only three spots are up for grabs out of the 72-man field, which would make playing well enough to qualify for The Open with totally new equipment extremely difficult.

From his tweeter:

I have officially withdrawn from @TheOpen qualifying tomorrow at St Anne’s Old Links. I cannot give 100% without my own equipment which has been mishandled by @AirFrance and must turn my attention to @DDFIrishOpen this weekend. Thanks for all the support.

I would be a hot lil potato

He wasn’t going to qualify with his clubs or any clubs.

So in his opinion, having maybe a 50% chance to make it with replacement clubs is worse than a 0% chance by WDing... got it... he is a quitter.

Agreed, I was shocked when I read it. What's the harm in getting a new set and giving it hell?

His club rep couldn’t get him a set? I realize this isn’t a tour stop but surely he could get something.

I think he could have bought a set in the club house and given it a go on the first day... Maybe he would have had his clubs for the 2nd day.

8 hr drive. He arrived Sunday. He had time to either take a train, or fly back and get them.

He can go pout in a bar somewhere with Daly.

You are assuming that the airline forgot them at the point of origin or knows exactly where they are. They may not know where they are exactly. I have had my bags show up almost 3 weeks later due to the airline not knowing where my stiff was, it was put on the wrong plane without being scanned (I understand this is worst case scenario).

Of course, he could also just be looking for a reason to back out and leverage the airline for the minimum winnings for making the cut.

Why?
Maybe ya won’t get 100% of your performance expectations, but ya can still give 100% of your effort.

This was a bitch move.

He’s a pussy, he must be becoming so irrelevant and poor that he needs some comped flights to qualifiers by calling them out.

I think he opened a second Nona. He’s played well enough over the years. If he wants to drink beer and grow moist supple breasts, how can ya blame him?

I don’t fault him for wanting to mask his alcoholism in running a restaurant (frick wish I could), I fault him for blaming lost clubs for him wanting to WD when in fact he wanted to be sipping a glenfiddich somewhere

Nah, I was assuming that as a tour pro, he'd have a backup set from last season he could go grab.
