I mean, you're likely going to get much more out of a 9 hole playing lesson. Longer, more parts of your game, realistic situations. But what's that cost?

9 hole lesson should be 2 hours. If it's done right, you won't be hitting just a single shot/putt at a time. I'd take that one easily.

I've never had a lesson at all.. do you tip the instructor afterwards? What's "decent human" protocol??

It's not necessary or expected. He's setting his own price even with the groupon deal.

$65 for a 9-hole playing lesson is a crazy deal.

I charge $200 for mine

Are you losing strokes or hitting it bad?

I'm just starting out playing. I've been playing about a year, maybe once every 5 weeks or so. I've improved but not enough to where I think I should be. I have a lot of bad habits I'm sure, need help correcting them.

Depends on what you're working on...swing mechanics or on-course decision making.

Just starting out you need a range lesson. No reason to learn course management with bad habits.

I agree that the range lessons will benefit you more at this time. I also think there is a lot of value in a playing lesson. Course management is just one part of a playing lesson. The one thing that benefited me the most when I did a playing lesson was alignment when your on the course. It's easy to be aligned correctly at the range because of the reference lines\points you have available to you. I was at a point where I was striking it well, but not hitting a lot of greens. After my playing lesson, my cone of error shrunk significantly.

That's why I asked for the cost. For just $20 more, he gets more time and a more complete look at his game. Seems like a no brainer even if he just a beginner.

I doubt it's a good playing lesson at the price tbh.

Naw most young teachers are fresh off the teaching manual so they are good on range.
