re: John Peterson- Early Retirement
I’ll go check that out.

Funny thing is that grass is always greener on the other side.

I would kill to have a shot on the PGA tour....for my real job I have a ton of travel and long office hours....I miss my family greatly at times when on the road.

When we discussed it he said he was a good player - but not good enough to ensure his Card year to year.

He said that having to sink a 10 footer on the 36th hole on Friday to make the cut to get a check got nerve racking real quick....and the pressure / strain was unreal.

Unless you are a top 100 player in the world, I don’t believe the life is as grand as expected.

Spoke in depth with a guy on the WebTour about this... he had qualified for a few US Opens, been a Walker Cup member, and had some wins in on the Web and Asian Tour...but hasn't broke through for a Tour card in about 6 years... he said "If I ever get to the point where I play lights out golf for three rounds and don't find myself in the top 10 of a tournament... then it is time to hang it up because my best just isn't good enough."

If you're a top 125 on the PGA Tour, life is pretty nice. It's when you fall into the categories where you don't get to set your schedule when things change

And if you had a few mil in the bank and other opportunities you'd probably hang it up just like Peterson is.

All I'm saying is if you didn't like your job and didn't need the money wouldn't you find another job? It's really not that complicated. Dude has a young son and new wife at home. It's not like he can afford to just fly private with his family and doesn't really like golf anyway. Couple that with he'll have to go back to Web finals this year to keep his card and it just isn't worth it.

I'm not saying it is an easy lifestyle by any means... just don't know that it would be an easy decision to hang up a young career with phenomenal earning potential compared to the 9-5 lifestyle. Like others on here have said, grind it out for the next 3-4 years and put a little extra in the bank, then have at it. He hasn't yet made "sit back and relax" type of money.

Grinding it out making cuts at T40 isn’t going to make you any money after you pay for your travel, caddie, etc.

The life isn’t as glamorous as everyone thinks. And he’s got enough aside to start up a ranch/farm and work through side investments (e.g. real estate, etc.)

Most here, myself included, can’t fathom giving it up because we dream of being paid to play the sport we love. But we love it so much because it isn’t a job.

John’s Twitter beefs aside, I can’t judge or fault him for this decision.

but I have a hard time comprehending it.
I really dont. Being a professional would be awesome

Being a professional golfer would also suck dick because it takes away having a normal family life. If my dad was a professional golfer, instead of the business man he is, our life and relationship would have been completely different.

I get it honestly

He has.....He has been on the PGA tour for 4 years, and the web.com for 2 years before that

The guy always seemed like a "too cool for school" meathead, then he got hurt, and now he doesn't feel like grinding to get back to the upper echelon. I'm sure some TAF spike chaser will give him $150-200k a year to "sell insurance", AKA, go play golf with other TAF spike chasers.

No doubt... I get such a kick out of reading the "Undercover Tour Pro" articles in Golf Digest. I'd be interested to see what all goes on behind the scenes.

I’m sure it’s a lot of cheating on spouses, gambling, drinking, etc. this is all pretty well known.
