Doak worked under Dye in grad school, IIRC. But he credits McKenzie for his inspiration.

Doak's book is often quite critical of Dye designs.

Pretty sure he worked under Doak for 4 or so years, I could be off though.

Doak is a "minimalist" designer. Minimalism is a school of golf design that focuses on concentrating design of a golf hole (or routing) around the natural features of the land. His most successful courses have been built on sand dunes, taking advantage of the sandy soil for drainage also allowing for the reuse of native elements.

Doak credits most of his accomplishments and success to golf course designer Pete Dye. Doak worked with Dye to learn how to construct golf courses during graduate school.

I need to read it, but from reviews, it sounds like he's mostly critical of guys like Rees Jones and Jack.

You use Wikipedia, I use the man himself

I spent three years working on construction projects for Pete Dye and his sons

If you read anything on Doak he often stops short of praising Dye as a good designer. But will credit him as an impeccable planner & architect.

There's a distinct difference when he talks about McKenzie. Raves over his designs.

From my perspective, he credits Pete for showing him the "ropes" and McKenzie for actual design inspiration.

There have been great course designers that couldn't effectively manage a firm. And there have been amazing firms with terrible designers.

Doak is the grand daddy, everyone else should just shut up and rent some dozers to come close to his works of art, he doesn’t move land and doesn’t man make bull shite and fake views ie: the rest of the nerds. I’ll report back from Crystal Downs before it snows in late 2019.

Ballyneal
Lost Dunes
3rd course at Sand Valley incoming
Streamsong
Etc etc etc

Does anyone know how much longer you can play there before they stop taking tee times in prep for Zurich?
