How much thought/testing do you put into getting the right driver shaft?

It's one of those things that people seem to pay attention to the least yet is way more important than the head you get. And to be fair, it's really tough to find a place to test a wide variety of shafts in South LA. Good fitters are few and far between as it is and they won't always have the latest and greatest. Demo Days may be the exception in terms of options, but the fitting process there isn't exactly what it should be to get you in the right stuff. For one, most of those reps are just salesmen. And you aren't the only guy there. Not to mention some demo days have multiple companies present, and who wants to spend an hour hitting one club when there's so much else to play around with? (And you better not be the guy hogging the range/trackman that long)
I guess I'm ranting a little bit. It's annoying that I can't go somewhere close to try Tensei, T1100, Rogue Silver, etc. much less with the right tip before I pull the trigger.

I have the same beef. For the most part I know the specs that I need. I guess I’ll try and find a high end shaft with those specs and hope for the best. I would love to take my Epic SZ Head and rest all of Graphite Design’s offerings. The Callaway rep literally had 2 Graphite Design shafts in his demo bag.

The reps are going to push whichever shafts are stock to the company in this case being Aldila and ProjectX. Hard to mix and match to an extent at a demo day

I research shaft options, but the guys at Golfballs pretty much know what I am looking for when I come in. Low spin rate and low launch. If they don;t have it in stock, which is rare, they have something similar, and can order it or I can hunt it down.

So when I got the EPIC last year, I took forever to test things on my own both on monitors, range, and playing rounds. I didn't just need a "low flight; low spin" shaft because that means different things for different companies. The HZRDUS Black did totally different things for me than the Diamana Whiteboard which both felt different than GD DI. But who can fit me into any of those shafts on multiple heads from multiple companies around here? I'd have to go to Houston to get things done fully within the hour time frame most fittings take. So like Chappy said I'm stuck trying to get the most info I can out of reviews and forums and hope that I get to test some stuff at a demo day. The right shafts for me are way too expensive to just buy outright without trying.

More options
Option#1, you can go on ebay and pick 3-5 shafts that you think will match up that already have the correct tip on the shaft. Buy them and go to the range (or a place with a monitor if that is an option). See which you like and sell the others on ebay. You may take a little hit, but not much. It won't be perfect, but it is an option.
I know guys that do that with irons. They will buy the 7 iron of the couple they are looking at or a 7 iron they want but with 3-5 different shafts. Then go to the range. When they decide the one they like the best, they sell them all on ebay and find a set with their specs.
It is not the best option but when you live in an area with limited golfing options it is an option.
Option #2, find people that have shafts that will fit your driver (for instance, I have the Callaway XR Pro and my shaft tip will fit your driver), and try to meet up with them and try their shafts on your driver to see if you like it.
I have an Oban kiyoshi white 75 gm, x-stiff (05). If you want to give it a swing, maybe we could meet up somewhere.
And I know a guy with the Oban Kiyoshi purple 65gm 05 with the same tip, he also had (might still have) the white 65gm 04 (stiff) that has the tip on it. That is how I came up with the one I got.

Option #3: Get some friends who are club whores and try their stuff and buy it from them when they move on to the next one. AKA: The Coachchappy

If you’re serious about your game and about to drop $250+ on a shaft, you should be willing to make the drive to Houston or wherever to make sure you’re getting the right one.

That’s pretty much my point and why I’m bitching.

Go to Bebu Golf Studio in Gretna. Guy worked at Club Champion in Maryland before coming back and has built on tour before. He does exactly what you are looking for. Otherwise, go to Houston.

Looks like he's been there less than a year, but I like what I'm seeing so far. His custom builds look pretty cool. Thanks.

I set aside some time on a work trip and go to a PGA Tour Superstore type place and try everything out. Did that last summer and ended up with the Aldila Rouge Silver - Stiff, cut down 1/2"

Allegedly, there is a website where you can input your numbers with a certain shaft from a launch monitor and it spits back shaft recommendations. I've yet to find the link

That and some dead lifts and you’ll be breaking 90 before you know it!
ETA: I kid I kid. Don’t have time to meet at Sonic.

You can hit my T1100 baw, I actually like the GD IZ shaft, but I know the Titleist hits it to far for your liking

Did this last week. We spent a hour and nearly 80 swings trying 10-12 different shafts. Once shaft was found, then we worked out different heads.
First time getting fitted like this. Well worth the $150.
