I’m a decent player....7 handicap. But I cannot hit a fairway wood off the deck to save my soul. Usually the shot is weak right and never any elevation on the shot. Any help out there?

Stand a little closer to the ball. That sounds like a low toe miss. “Pick it up, put it down” is my thought when I need to get back to smashing it.

Choke up and swing it like a 4 iron traping the ball and creating a shallow divot. Get it out of your head that you’re swinging a wood.

That’s what I was trying to say.

I've never heard this phrase before. Mind explaining?

Put a ball on a piece of wood and practice hitting off that. It will make you "sweep" the ball and get proper angle to launch it properly.

It’s sometbing I came up with myself. It just reminds me not to over swing. I’m long enough where just solid contact is going to advance the ball a long way with a 3w. So, I tell myself “pick it up, put it down” to calm myself before hitting a 3w on a par 5. Just get it down the middle and put a wedge in my hand.

I’ll also follow ELLs advice while I’m thinking this.

I struggled too with consistency off the deck so I got a 15.5 degree hybrid.

Barely lost distance and was much more consistent.

Absolutely! You must pinch, or trap, the ball between the club face & ground to compress the ball. You gotta trust the loft of the club to do its job...

Sounds like your lower body is in the way of you making a strong swing. Feel like you’re rolling your right ankle laterally toward your left to start your pivot. Your knee/thigh will move out of the way and give you a pocket to swing unimpeded.

Let the club do the work. I set up ball slightly in the front of my stance similar to a driver. Run my rights hand (i am righ handed) down my right thigh just a litltle to set my shoulders. Swing with weak/loose hands like youre holding a stick of butter. Then make the swing.

The sensation is that it is the weakest swing i can make and i get great results with it.

So you're saying that you should take a divot with a three wood? That's sound ridiculous to me.

Is that what I said? My response was specifically for his issue. I wouldn't have told him that if he said his problem was hitting every 5 wood fat off the fairway. It was advice to help him make better contact and get the ball off the ground using the middle of the face. If he's focusing on a 4 iron swing and getting through the ball instead of trying to "pick it", he should have more success with those fairway shots based on the miss he described.

Are you joking? You shouldn’t be gouging, but a well struck three wood off the deck will have a thin, shallow divot. It’s a descending blow.

Thanks for all the advice. Very helpful. I think I’m probably over swinging instead of letting club do the work. Thanks again!

Next weekend. What course? I can get us on at a place just outside of Dallas. What do you want to play? I suggest match play, $1k a hole.
