I only started taking golf seriously in the last 3 years. Took lessons from a coach at OU. Have tried to play much more often. And definitely establish a handicap.

I'm currently a 19 handicap. About 5-6+ years ago, I bought some Callaway X2 Hot Pro irons off ebay at a great price.

However, outside of a few rounds, I don't think I've ever hit these clubs consistently. I have a pretty fast swing speed (was sitting consistently between 108-112mph when recently being fitted for Callaway Mavrik Sub Zero that I absolutely love). But I know irons are much more about feel and I worry hitting them indoors with a simulator could be deceptive.

I am heading out to a local club tomorrow for a Titleist demo day, but I hear great things about Mizuno irons as well.

Any thoughts on barely sub-20 handicap, fast swinger who has trouble with consistent club strike on irons?

Game-improvement irons.

GI irons, more forgiving.

I'd recommend hitting as many brands and model as you can to find the one you like.

2020 Best GI Irons

2019 GI Irons

2018 GI Irons

I just recently got the Rogue X. Liked them more than the Mavriks, and were much cheaper. Just get what feels good to you. Edwin Watts have plenty of either used or new tech irons you can hit.

I had some of those x2 hot irons a long time ago. They have a huge offset which could be causing some of your ball striking issues. I went to some blades, which was dumb as I was a 14 hdcp at the time, but I hit them much better. Most mizunos are like butter but hit everything and find something that fits your eye and feels right

Get fitted period.

Don't listen to anyone telling you about anything based on your description of your game. You need someone to see your actual swing, impact and metrics. Without get fitted your lie angles may be off, the shaft length, shaft characteristics, the sole width, etc. There are so many variables that you should get fit unless it is financially not feasible for you.

Ping makes some very nice game improvement irons.

I played a rental set of G400s last year and they were easy to swing.

Most of the major manufactures have a game improvement iron.

If you really have 110 mph swing, getting the right shaft is important.

I got down to a 15 last year, back to an 18 right now. I consider myself a fairly decent ballstriker. I do not like the overall clunky look and feel of some of the GI irons.

I recently picked up a set of Apex 19s from Callaway, and I absolutely love them. They're a players iron, but pretty damn forgiving. The lofts are jacked, so my 4-AW is basically the same as a regular 3-PW

Check out Srixon 585s. I think you could use those for quite some time even as you improve.

Or get some 565s on sale...prior model.

I’ll be the first to say it. Lessons will be more valuable than new clubs. And incase you are wondering, no I do not follow my own advice. Lol but I have finally started taking lessons though with all my new clubs.

No doubt. I know that new clubs are not going to magically fix me.

But I also feel like I am not nearly good enough to be hitting X2 Hot Pros.

I really want to try these but I can’t find anywhere to hit them in OKC outside with a Trackman.

Clubs are like suits. A well fitted cheap suit will look way better than an ill-fitted expensive suit.

Same for irons.

Get game improvement irons, they work.

Like everyone has already said, go and try as many as possible and get what fits you best. After swinging about 10 different brands I ended up with the Ping G410s and after getting used to them I'm hitting them very consistent. My handicap is right around yours too.

Only irons I hit well were the T400s. Lord they are ugly looking. Hard for me to get over honestly.

Didn’t hit anything else well.

Like people mentioned previously. The issue with a lot of mid to high handicappers is they think they need to get this forged clubs because “man, they sure look awesome”. But, they can’t even come close to hitting them. You need to go get fitted and take the professionals advice. You’re gonna need game improvement irons. As your game improves due to practice and lessons then you should think about getting more of a performance iron. One that is designed for you to truly shape shots. That’s something that most golfers can’t do especially the ones with 16 or above handicap. Just my two cents.
