Help me choose my new set of irons

TL;DR - a "not terrible" golfer is looking to play more often, wants to get a new set of irons to up his game, and is wanting recs.

Backstory: my grandfather was a scratch golfer and would play close to 200 rounds a year when his health allowed. He would bring me along a lot of times as a kid and I really enjoyed playing when he took me. But I gravitated to other sports as I got into high school and didn't really pick up a club again until I was well in my 30s. When I did, it was for a charity tourney that wasn't very serious. I seem to be getting invited to these tourneys more often now and I'm rediscovering a love for golf again. Enough so that I'm looking to play more often outside of these scrambles and in turn, upgrade my clubs a bit.

The clubs I have been using are a hand-me-down set of really old MacGregors that were probably a beginner set for the person I get them from. When I've used them, they've been "ok" but they have been very inconsistent and just really don't feel all that good when I strike the ball. I'm not terrible and the people I have played with (that actually do play more often) have been impressed with my swing with how little I play. I don't really have a problem staying in the fairway with my irons. That's probably the best part of my game and I'm never too far out of bounds on any shot I take.

As far as a budget, I don't want to drop too much in case I don't end up playing as much as I hope to. I wasn't really surprised to see new sets for $1,300+ so I'm good with a used set. I stumbled on 2ndSwing but even some used sets were over $1K. I'd like to stay around $500 if I could but I'm concerned I wouldn't get much better than what I already have. I also wouldn't even know where to start as far as brand and series. There's just so much out there now and it's a bit overwhelming.

Any recs for what might be a good "next step" set of irons? Or places to go to better educate myself on how to pick a set of clubs?

PXGs are $79 per club new.

Some people love them, some don’t.

The PXG 0211's are very good clubs.

They are a steal at 79.00 per club.

I have Calloway Maverick irons and I love em. You could probably find a good deal on them now cause they came out a couple of years ago.

Visits Callaway Pre Owned. Can't recommend them enough.

I picked up a set (4-A) of practically new Apex '19 irons a couple months ago fit to my specs, for $540. Loving them so far.

Go to local box store and see what your swing speed is.. so you can figure out what shaft flex you need. Then go to Calloway preowned . Com

Not reading all of that, but I was once a decent golfer (shooting mid to upper 70s most rounds). Took a few years off and recently decided to get back into it and got fitted for some PXG 0311’s. Cost with fitting was just over $1000. I couldn’t be happier.

Whatever you do, figure out the right shaft and lie angle for your swing before buying.

Go to Golfwrx classifieds. You can find great used stuff there.

Good stuff guys. Thx!

The PXG's look interesting. Look to be a little more than I'd want to spend but might consider them if I decide to make a more conscious effort to play more.

The Callaway's look more my speed. I'll do a little more research on the different series.

Nice suggestion about checking my swing speed. Edwin Watts is right around the corner. Would they be a good place to go or would you recommend another shop in BR?

Would it be better if I just go ahead and buy a complete set instead of just the irons?

+1

You need to figure out your swing speed as well so even if you're not getting custom fitted with weight, you at least know what flex shaft you need.
