Been having some issues around the green with consistent chipping, mostly stuff just off the fringe/first cut, having trouble getting under the ball correctly and dialing distance. Have lost a lot of confidence with my feel/hands.

Pretty dialed in with anything I can get 25% plus swings in with the wedges but anything under that has been totally hit or miss lately.

Any drills or techniques you guys recommend?

I generally chip with a 60 almost exclusively except out of the sand with a 56.

I carry a 52 as well, maybe I need to look at a more bump and run style game? Just never had that in the bag.

Gotta learn to use lower lofts at the right time. Raymond Floyd would use a 7 iron, pw, you name it.

Check out Mr Short Game on YouTube. He gives simple lessons and he is fairly entertaining as well.

In David Leadbetter's "The Short Game" there is a section on "the chip/putt stroke" that is easy to learn and great from right off the green

I quit using my 56 around the greens unless I am in the sand or hitting a flop over a bunker or some type of obstruction.

My PW or 8-iron get more use for pitching and chipping. I have way more control and confidence in them.

Genuinely curious, why chip with a 60 degree? I maybe hit mine 1-2 a round at most. I've always chipped with a 48 degree PW and I have a pretty decent short game.

I read the chips just like a putt, pick a spot I want it to land and how it will break, how it will roll, etc.

Learning to be versatile with a 60 can help your game in a lot of ways and in many more situations than a PW. Examples are over bunkers, raised greens, or better distance control with multi-tiered greens. These situations come up often. That being said, there's nothing wrong with clubbing up and using some touch. But I don't find that approach to help in the long run. I almost exclusively use my 60 around the greens.

I am someone who also only uses a 60 degree anywhere inside 50 yards, and consider it to be the strongest part of my game. For example, I could be a half an inch from the green on the fringe and I’d still rather hit my 60 than putt.

There’s some times where I haven’t played in a while and I lose the feel which sucks because even though I am infinitely more comfortable with my 60, it is a tougher club then running up a 7i or putting for example.

A random drill I came across that helped me get feel back once is gripping the club normally and then taking off your right thumb and then hitting the chip.

I have no idea why this works, but it makes crisp contact every time. My dad is a **** golfer and an even worse chipper, I taught him this trick and he instantly made perfect contact every time. He was dumbfounded and asked why everyone doesn’t do this all the time haha

Again, no idea why it works. It just does. And then after a few without the right thumb touching a club. you gently add back your thumb with light pressure until it feels comfortable again.

Hinge and Hold technique - lots of Youtube vids by Mickelson on it.

"The only way to chip" according to the FIGJAM himself.

Learn to use the bounce. Ball no further back than middle of stance. Make sure trail arm doesn’t stall in the downswing.

I rewatch that video several times a year. It really works for me.

Good stuff guys. Much appreciated.

As others have said, my 60 inside 80 yards for me is my go to club but the real close and straight forward chips have been giving me nightmares which sucks.

Going over a bunker or up something blind onto a small spot are much easier than plopping it 10-15 feet with control for me right now. Its bizarre.

Gotta get back to the basics with my shoulders and using the bounce.

I chip with my 52 most of the time. If I have to chip over a bunker or something else I use a 60. I was a terrible chipper until I watched Clay Ballard(Top Speed Golf) video on chipping. Instantly changed my chipping game. Also I will use other clubs like a 7 iron if I am far from the hole and can run it up there. I read somewhere that the longer the ball is on the green, the better chance of making it.

Check to be sure you aren’t dropping your trail shoulder in the downswing. You can somewhat get away with that in a full swing but not on a chip or short pitch.

LINK Watch this video or go see Errol since you're in Nashville. I just got a lesson from him and the only change he made to my technique was in the setup. Pressure left and shirt buttons over the ball.

Until you get your confidence back, you might try using a putting stroke with a pitching wedge or nine iron, just to get you through a round. Set up like hitting a putt, place the ball in the middle of your stance (or a bit behind), start the motion with a slight forward press, then execute a putting stroke.

I use my 56 exclusively if I am off of the green but I also am very confident with it. Ball slightly back of front foot with club shaft slightly forward. Basically I treat the whole approach like a putting stroke. If I want more roll out I lean shaft a bit more forward. It is probably not text book but it is the same stroke I take with the putter.

I follow his advice. Open up the left foot, GW or 8i are my typical clubs around the green, hinge and hold. Having confidence is key, commit to the shot, if you start decelerating and other things you are doomed.

That's the video that made my chipping 10 times better. Clay explains everything so well.

I stopped chipping and started pitching with an 8 iron when around the greens and saw improvement instantly.

If you're still insisting on chipping, Phil has a YT series on chipping and really simplifies it.
