I was blessed to see a high handicaper have the time of his life at our member guest. I only had to give him 3 a side, but he shot a net 54 so he was able to beat me and everyone else.

I sent a email to our pro to highlight the great time this gentlemen must have had and I also checked his scores in the system. His low round before this event was 88 and his high was 110. Amazingly, he was able to beat his handicap in every match!

And to answer your question, the chances are very good since the chance of making 200 dollars or so over a weekend of golf will make plenty of golfers throw away their dignity.

It's why I hate tournaments in general. Especially member guests where there's not many people in your club who may know how legit the guys handicap is.

I chose not to enter the "players pool" for an additional
$200.

The pro asked me why? I said, "I don't gamble if
I can't figure out who is going to win."

I know people can vary their game, but it is statistically improbable to beat your handicap in 5 straight 9 hole matches. I beat mine once, was over by 1 twice and played poorly twice.

My regular group does not have any liars. Handicaps range from 4 index to 20 index. It's hard enough on the single digit guys when people are truthful. We also switch partners every 6 holes.

Hopefully, the course takes note of this player and bans him from any future competitions. I'm usually pretty lenient when it comes to these types of things, but that is pretty ridiculous.

For our member/guest tournaments the guest has to have a GHIN handicap or the pro calls the guests club to check his handi.

A few years ago a guest turned in a 17 handi (he was from TX), he shot 74 1st day. The pro called his club and they said he was known all around those parts for sandbagging. They kicked him & the member out of the tournament.

Today, our D player, a 20, Shot an 80. I've also seen him shoot 102. It can happen, but not 3 days in a row.

Odds of shooting an exceptional tournament score

If your guy is a 22 handicap, his index is likely in the 19.0-20.0 range, so the odds of him shooting 10 shots less than his handicap once is 1 in 37,000. If he plays 100 rounds per year, that's once every 370 years. So, yeah, that guy is a cheater.

Chances of him ending up at a local Sonic after would be favorable. Like 1 in 1.

Just kidding.

I have no clue what the hell y'all are talking about.

Back when I used to hover around the 90s, I could once in a blue moon throw up a low 80s score. Just had everything come together on a fairly easy course. Again, we're talking once in a blue moon but still hard to call a guy out on.

A 76 is just stupid tho. I've gotten to where my bad rounds are mid-upper 80s and average rounds are 81-83. I play a lot and still rarely break 80, and if I do it's 78-79.

A 76 isn't just getting on a hot streak of good ball striking, it's doing everything right over 18 holes.

A 76 is one bad swing, maybe a few missed putts for par, the whole day. It's not perfect, but a 22 ain't gonna have multiple rounds like that.

I'd fight him/not pay the bet.

I had a partner in a member/member once, legit 15 handicap shoot a 77 in better ball on a 74.5/138 slope course. Needless to say we took the Calcutta. No one really bitched because he plays there every weekend and never shot that before or since 15 years later.

I'm an 18, have never shot 76. Especially not playing it down.

I wish handicaps had a variance measure - it would give others a better feel for what would be possible.

I'm probably a 10 to 12 handicap all things considered but am capable of shooting mid-70's or even a 72 or 73 if I start feeling it. I can do that over multiple days as well. I was a + handicap at one point a decent while ago and can still play like that if things start clicking.

On the flip side of that, I can just as easily throw out a 95+ if I am spraying it off the tee and the course doesn't suit my game. I do that just as often as I break 80.

How do you consider variance with a handicap? Weird shite can happen with a high variance player.
