Average life of a golf ball
Random thought after watching PGA today. I wonder what the average life of a golf ball is for a tour player.. most finish the round with the same ball, does that same ball get out in play the next day? If not, why? If the balls are so great.. just a few random thoughts.

They only use a ball for a few holes and switch. Even if they don't have a penalty shot, they don't play the whole round with the same ball much less start the next day with it.

Grooves can cut up the balls, and they have an endless supply so why not?

It all depends on the player. Some guys will play the round with a whole ball, some change after a birdie, some change every 3 holes. Tiger puts a new ball in play on every par 3.

Most carry anywhere from 6 balls to a dozen.

3 holes...Seriously

The golf ball looses some serious characteristics with compression, flight stability, and spin after about 10 hits. Obviously that will change with lower swing speeds, but tour swing average is about 115mph (Driver), so the tour guys will change their ball religiously every three holes & some will swap them out every 2.

I'd love to see some data, because many amateurs will sit in the 90 mph range for swing speed so you are talking a 15-25% increase at impact, which is measurable for sure, but its not like its 2-3x

I was under the impression it had more to do with the damage to the cover than the inside of the ball. Now the cover can have an effect on all of those things but not from the driver.

Most I’ve went without losing a ball was two rounds. I retired it after that because I was going to play a 3rd round with it, but it was scuffed up quite a bit and looked really rough.

I'd bet that nearly all players use a whole ball.

I tried the "pro" method in my tournament this weekend and I think it made a difference. Used each ball only 4-5 holes and shot one of my best rounds in a while

I'm honestly curious about when a ball's performance changes noticeably.

I have played 54 holes with a Bridgestone and haven't noticed any change. I'm also not that good and this is by far the longest a ball has lasted for me.

A pro on the Mackenzie Tour once played the whole tournament with the same ball (72 holes) and won.

Youtube. How long can you use a golf ball?

Gary Woodland only changes the ball when he makes a bogey.

So for the average golfer, hit it until there is a huge scuff mark

I can attest to this as this is when he tossed one to my son coming off the 8th at the Zurich a couple years ago.

re: Average life of a golf ball
Can a pro golfer use a new ball when putting or does he have to use the same ball he started the hole with? I’m guessing this would only be a problem if they hit cart path or something that would scuff the ball. I always assumed they putted with a different ball than one they played down the fairway.

You have to finish a hole with the ball that started the hole. You can take the ball out of play if it is damaged, but I believe that your group has to approve that.

You can change the ball after the hole is over for any reason.

I have 10 of the same 12 balls I bought as a sophomore in high school in 1997.

Granted I've played three times.
