9 year old son, want to get him lessons
Posted by tha mastablasta on 5/28/17 at 7:01 pm00
He's got a very natural ability to hit the ball and a desire to play. I'm trying to foster it. Does anyone have suggestions about jr. golf pros in the BR area?

just let him play....and have fun....send him to some junior clinics.....if he is still into the game, get him some lessons at a later point.

I don't want to screw him up fundamentally. I've been playing for 25+ years and am a single digit handicap, but I don't know the odds and ins of teaching the swing.

What's his grip look like?
You can teach alignment and ball position for now.

How many rounds has he played and what's his best score? Do you belong to a club?

Very good grip. A touch on the strong side, but that's ok with me. What I'm trying to get him to do is learn to pinch the ball. That's the concept that I can't quite wrap my mind on how to get him to execute

We played today. He plays the par fours from 150 in. 5's from 200 in, 3's from 100 to 110. He shot 88 today. Don't belong anywhere. He's gone to LSU golf camp 3 or 4 times. He's plays a lot with me in the summers. Maybe 10-15 rounds a summer

If cost isn't an issue, I would suggest a couple of lessons with a pro to focus on grip, alignment, & stance. If he has access to a nearby course I would have him practice, practice, practice. A couple of buckets on the range but focus on the short game. Chipping & putting.

If you're a single digit handicapper, you're better off teaching him how to get around the course...playing out of trouble, getting up and down, and reading putts.
Let him do the junior clinics and tournaments this summer.
Once he gets into his teens and a more "adult" body/swing, you can get him some serious lessons.

If he likes it, and can hit the ball good get him lessons. 9 is not too young. I don't really have any specific recommendations in your area, but unlike some have said he's not too young.

Buddy of mine has his kids with a group that takes lessons at Carter.
They tee it up from the 150, like the op's son.
One is going into 6th, and the other to 3rd next year. They walk 9 after school for a couple of hours. Pretty cool way learn the game.

Don't listen to most of these people 9 is not too young for lessons.
Too young to start worrying about perfecting the swing yes but not too young to get with a pro and drill fundamentals.
I wish I had taken lessons as a 9 year old! All my friends who played golf as a little kid have such a naturally easy looking swing
