A few weeks back my dad called me and asked what weekend I was free to go play golf in New Mexico. We had a bunch of stuff going on this summer with weddings and trips, so only a couple of options worked. I let him know and a few hours later he had my flight information emailed over. 3 days later I was on a plane.

I convinced a good buddy of mine to drive down from Kansas to meet my dad in Oklahoma. From there, they drove 6 hours and picked me up at the airport in Rosewell, New Mexico. When I walked out of the airport in Rosewell, it was 94 degrees. 70 miles later when we pulled into Rainmakers golf course, it was 76.

We played 2 courses while we were in town, Rainmakers & Inn of the Mountain Gods, narrowly avoiding a downpour both days. Rainmakers was unbelievable. I've played some pretty good golf courses and it was definitely top 10 for me, maybe top 5. The views were incredible and it was in fantastic condition. It wasn't as quirky as traditional desert golf in a place like Arizona, but you had to keep it pretty straight. The greens were slow, but the undulation and challenge of reading the greens in the mountains was awesome. The next day we played Inn of the Mountain Gods. It's a casino course, so it had a very typical resort feel. Course was in pretty good shape with a decent layout, but not nearly as nice as Rainmakers. Everything funneled back towards the fairway and the tall pines made it feel a lot more like Georgia or North Carolina rather than New Mexico. All in all a great trip with some great dudes. Something about that mountain air sticks with you. Nothing like it. Mexico Video

Me and some buddies looked into the Inn of the Mountain Gods. Any other courses worth playing close enough to the resort to drive there and back for the day?

Rainmakers 100%. Inn of the Mountain Gods is good, but Rainmakers is amazing. It's no more than 20 minutes away. We stayed in Alto at Bottle House Cabins. It was awesome, pretty affordable, and slept 4 comfortably. Great trip overall.

It was an awesome trip. If you're an avid enough golfer that you take trips to travel, New Mexico is a spot I would definitely recommend!

I’ve been meaning to play butterfield one of these days. Might have to hit up ruidoso while I’m out.

Were the cabins on or near the Alto Lakes golf course? I ask because that's where the in laws retired. I played the course many times.

My dad has a place in Ruidoso and he plays at mountain gods frequently. I know he enjoys it a lot.

Recommended if you ever get the chance. Working on a write up for my round at Prairie Dunes as well.
