And the fact that I'm leaving 5 games off I think also deserve the Top 5 speaks volumes for this series. There will never be quite a series like Mario.

I agree with everything on this list. My only difference would be I'd have to drop Galaxy because for some reason I have yet to play it and Galaxy 2. Guess I'll have to go pick them up with all the praise they keep getting around here.

Thinking about this just now became very very hard. But I think I have to go with how it was the first time I played it....

These were the kind of games that were just pure magic when you played them. I grew up with a Nintendo, so you'd think that or the SNES would be on top, but man, I was just so blown away by Mario 64, I view it, maybe not as one of the greatest games ever, but an experience that is pretty much unmatched in gaming for me.
I do want to add the Karts, Smash Brothers, Strikers, Golf Tennis, Party, etc, but my list would be 50 games long.

Yoshi's Island is almost a flawless game. I'm a big fan of platformers and it is a perfect example of the genre. Incredible game.

I remember the first time I played it was in a Blockbuster where they had it set up right before it came out. Mind completely blown.
