the M1014 has always felt weak to me. I'd use the DAO before it.
Sniping: M98B has the highest damage output at 95.
M40A5 is the best for medium range sniping since it has the fastest bolt action.
M417 is the best semi-auto with the SKS a close second.

I liked the M26 Mass glitch way more than the USAS with frags.
I do laugh how pretty much every Metro match would turn into USAS cannon fire within minutes of someone using it because everyone else would equip it. shite was ridiculous.

For Assault Kit: M16, AEK, F2000 (you will catch crap for using the M16 bc it's an "easy" weapon, but who cares, get the kills, help your team)
For Support Kit: L86A2
For Engineer Kit: Scar H, G36 (Love the Javeline as an AT weapon)
I rarely play recon. I generally equip the .44 Mag as my sidearm, and I use the Kobra sights on all my weapons if I have it unlocked.
I'm not too familiar with any of the shotguns other than the 870 and SPAS. I equip the slug round on both and I find it works quite well.
I initially, like you, hated getting into vehicles. I enjoy it now, but even still, use them at least if only for a ride, it can be a long walk on some of the maps.
Anything you need to know about unlocking anything from weapon sights, new weapons, vehicle upgrades, etc... It's all located on battlelog. Your stats are kept, your battle reports from recent games you've played, favorite servers, EVERYTHING is on battlelog.
ETA: To cure your vehicle sorrows, find a friend (or friends) that all have mics. Myself and buddy of mine use skype to voice comm while we run around the map in APC's and Tanks. It's 1000x more fun that way, or at least I think so. That and it's way easier to stay alive and be more effective for your team as armor if you as a gunner can point out things to your driver and vice versa.

They figured out that the "45" in UMP45 meant that it shoots a 45 caliber round so dice buffed it.. 33 damage up close but the drop off is pretty drastic but its time to kill in close quarters is very fast. Its serviceable in CQ and Metro.
P90 and mp7 are legit going to be the best bets for PDWs. Throw a laser on both, extended mags for mp7 and suppressor on the p90. Both have high rates of fire and both are laser beams.
Everything else has been pretty accurate.

this is probably the best time to start learning about BF3. Everything is pretty much balanced out now...nothing is really OP.
I do miss the almighty USAS w/ frags and the super FAMAS.

The USAS?
I used to feel dirty when I would equip it. Sit on an ammo box, find a nice window or rooftop, and destroy anything that's not heavy armor. (sbr2 pro-tip)
