all the local files are stored on the server, too. not on your hard drive.
so guess what? people have already reported that the server has deleted their cities

The REAL problem is the Glassbox. Its the strongest and weakest aspect of the game.
While the simulation is amazing - traffic is no longer a graphical representation of a statistic, its now a graphical representation of each and every unit being moved - its hamstrung by running on a single thread. THATS why the city tiles are so tiny... the average single core cant run anything more than that.

EA and Origin. I would expect absolutely nothing less.
True.
So if I understand this right, you can only play this game if connected to the Internet?

actually, the servers being down is a good thing. see, with the servers down, you are unable to realize the amazing potential the game has but is artificially and unnecessarily gimped by a lazy design team. EA is doing you a favor by not allowing you to play.

That's just it. Glassbox sounds amazing but we don't get to see it work without the training wheels.
When they announced the game I felt like they were almost solely focusing on glassbox. With that being the case, why did they cripple the game?
It just pisses me off that they focused on making the game easy to run (aka more players) rather than making it great.

I dont think the game is too easy, its just in the beta they made everything cheap so you could experience more of it in a shorter time period.
They also greatly improved the visualization of statistics such as happiness, education, or health. now you see a an actual representation of each of these, not just a graphic representing the statistical model.
If they would have designed glassbox to run on at least two cores for just the simulation, they tiles could have been twice as big and I wouldnt have any problem purchasing the game - regardless of the myriad of other problems Ive gone over in the previous reviews. As it is though, I bet we have to wait for a sequel before they do that.

I heard that the fate of your city is pretty much determined by your neigboring cities and the resources they provide, which is also run by another player online. Sooo, if they let their city go to shite then yours is done. Weak.

I'm not saying its too easy, just that they took out some great components like the highways, regions, and larger tiles to make it run on one core. By making it run easier, they sorta dumbed the overall game down by default.
I agree though, by watering down glass box, they killed a ton of potential. I don't like the mod restriction either. That was the beauty of 4.

yes and no. your city is affected by other cities in your region to some degree, but you can also set up a private region and control all the cities within.

Never played that. But I really just don't like this trend of having to be constantly connected in order to play a game. What if I'm having Internet problems at home. Or, what if I go to my inlaws' place? They don't have wifi so I couldn't connect my laptop unless I had a long cord to wire myself directly into the network. Let me just play a game by myself, cut off from the rest of the world!

yeah, but thats not the way the game was designed to be played. That just seams tacked on.

The game looks addicting, and the Glassbox engine is impressive. However, it looks as if the game is too much "sim" and not enough "city".
I'm rather agnostic with respect to the online DRM requirements, as it won't seem to affect me much. The microscopic size of the cities, however, does trouble me.
"SimCity" truly is a misnomer. "SimTown" or "SimVillage" would be more apt titles.

Man I wish this game would have been good. Sim City 4 is the shite. This game could have been so awesome.

I finally got in and I don't know if I really like this game or really hate this game. The best way to put it is that the game got more real. Maxis traded away the artistic designing stuff and created a challenging game that almost demands you play by its rules. The left side of my brain is in as much glee as the right side of my brain is in agony.
City Size isn't a big problem, time on the other hand is. Cheetah speed moves horribly slow, and since you need money in your coffers to do everything, waiting for more money takes forever. If you make the most of your resource (ore, coal, oil) by the time you've spread your city among 1/2 - 3/4 of the zone you've been given, you will have enough money to be dreading expanding further.
As I leave this little review here, gaze upon my little city. It has grown to 1/4 of a million people, and is quickly running out of water, has no space for sewage, has oil wells sitting in the middle of it (go figure), has traffic that will never be solved (One of the things SC4 is 100% better for), and has such a criminal problem (mostly because of traffic) that it makes starting another city in the region a harder challenge than doing this one.

The city size limit just seems prohibitively small.
I mean, in one little screen shot, I can see the entire "box" in which you've been allowed to build.
It seems you really have no room whatsoever to allow your creativity to run wild.
