Remember when EA announced its SimCity MMO over a year ago? No? We don't either, and that's because the MMO moniker was only recently applied following the title's disasterific launch. Not so, according to EA president Frank Gibeau, though. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, he insisted that the online-only title has always been an MMO and that it's transition from a single-player franchise to an always-on environment has nothing to do with DRM. "I was involved in all the meetings. DRM was never even brought up once. You don't build an MMO because you're thinking of DRM -- you're building a massively multiplayer experience, that's what you're building," Gibeau said. "SimCity started out and felt like an MMO more than anything else and it plays like an MMO." He also posits that DRM is a "failed dead-end strategy" and "not a viable strategy for the gaming business." So why didn't EA market SimCity as an MMO from the beginning? Apparently it just slipped everyone's mind. "I'm disappointed that we didn't do a better job communicating that upfront," Gibeau explains.

I would have liked to listen in on their meeting when they came up with this brilliant plan.

Considering the fact ea spends more on marketing than development at a 3:1 ratio....color me skeptical

So he's either a lying sack of crap or EA is totally incompetent at not only making games but at marketing them as well. Great place to put yourself given the string of disappointments EA has been releasing.

Its both. He is a lying sack of shite and EA is incompetent at both making and marketing games.

If they weren't, they wouldn't need to spend 3x more money on marketing.

EA managed to combat piracy by ensuring no one would even want to steal their shite game and play it for free.

Even with the offline hack the game is still terribad

Kudos to them. True trendsetters

you know whats terrible, had they just provided an offline mode i would have bought the game despite the numerous threads i started bashing it after the betas. well not for full price, but still.

sales dropped off, badly. this may not get a full expansion (well knowing EA they already have all the content for a true expansion and they just left it off the original). but after that - no expansion no sequel. the death of SimCity.

Once they "fixed" the servers, I really got into the game. Then the game started having crash issues.....then it started rolling back my cities every hour or so....I would love the game if it would actually work.

Person hits 1.8 million city population with no water, power, or sewage

Naturally no water, power, or sewage leads to no crime and no health problems.

Cool simulator, EA. Eat shite

Oh dear christ they're still saying this? Its pretty damn apparent the main reason the game is online only for DRM, and admitting should do little to change their sales.

If they wanted offline mode it would be there. Firaxis explained this when they released Civ Chronicles...they explained that the best way to build a game for both options is to set it up for online play. Then if you want to play offline, the game just sets the "server" to the user's computer. It's comically easy.

Exactly. The same people would have bought it, even if they said the online was for DRM.

But now that they continue to lie themselves into a deeper hole, I think I will simply boycott them for good.

Truly amazing how shitty EA has become. They take it to new levels. They take it all the way to 10 then crank it to 11.

Don't they pay people to try stupid, crazy shite in their games and see what happens?

Most companies do, except its pre-production and its called the "testing" phase

Who needs quality assurance and boundary tests though, when you can spend that money on more marketing and just test code in Production with paying customers

People bought it be because of the name. Just another chapter in the story of EA buying and ruining IP.

Well yea, but EA was in control of Maxis ten years ago for SC4.

Really it feels like they said "Hey, we're coming onto the 10 year anniversary of SC4, why don't we put out a Sim City game?" (Someone answered "Because we were making a way more money off developing 'The Sims' expansions?", but he was quickly sacked). The problem was that the entire team at EA isn't made up of the Nerd First-Money Seeking-Rebellious Programmers of the 90s who really had to put together a GREAT game. Today it's made up of Artsy-Fartsy-Kiss up-"Creative" Programmers and Corrupt-Fictional Wall Street Rip Off-Corporate Goons who just want to make money off of the name. Ultimately nobody wanted to improve on SC4, they either wanted to make an artistic design or a quick buck, nobody wanted to make the next great Simcity
