So taking a historical character and using creative liberties with who he was, something that is the heart and soul of this franchise, is racism?

I bet if you polled most Japanese people and asked them if they cared if a black guy was portrayed as a samauri in a video game, you'd get a lot of blank stares.

Considering the exact same character is a boss in Nioh 2 (and the protagonist in Nioh 1 is William Adams), I find it odd that this has gained so much attention.

That said, the hip hop beat in the gameplay footage was awful. I pray that it was just trailer music :D

These game studios are so lazy. You don't need a "great" black civilization to make an AC game.

They could have made something that took place around the Anglo-Zulu war, or something that focused on some of the precolonial empires. There's plenty of history that could be used as source material.

It 100% had a hip hop beat to it. Hell the top comment on YouTube agrees

Ok. It's a hip hop beat. Has to be a rap song. They have modernized a lot of their music in the past, so calling this it is just another grasping at straws argument .

TIL a YouTube comment is considered a source.

Exactly right Sic.

I bet half of the posters in here complaining about AC Shadows probably don't even play AC titles. Likely angry white boys listening to rap while being racist in COD lobbies. Wouldn't know the first thing about the history of this series.

Just another pointless argument with this.

He's the playable character, so he has to be historically accurate, even though no other character or game n the series has been held to that standard ever.

The frick are you talking about? You’re moving goalposts. Nobody has ever said it had to be based on a historically accurate character. Just that every game previous to this has had a main playable character from the setting of the game. How many times is it going to need to be pointed out to you?

There’s been historical characters in all the games and to me that’s always been an interesting aspect of the ones I’ve played despite the silly shite like da Vinci inventing assassin tools.

I can guarantee you if yasuke was an npc in this game, nobody would care about his character. You’re also just ignoring all the other historical inaccuracies all over the game that people have pointed out

Yasuke as the main PC is obviously shoehorned in for woke points and pandering.

Review all of Road's posts and get back to me

And I'll ignore any further "historical inaccuracies" comments since I've shown over and over that's what Ubisoft has always done with these games.

Quick scan of his posts from the previous page because that’s all I I’m taking the time to look at and he’s not saying anything different than I am. I don’t care about the BG3 stuff because I haven’t played it. If there’s anything else, then you can quote it

Apologies, fatkid was the main offender.

quote:

Because they finally made an Assassin's Creed based in Japan, and they made the main character a black samurai who did not actually exist.

quote:

If they wanted to use this black samurai then they should have used him as a quest giving NPC like they have done with all other historical figures in every other game they've ever made. Instead they made him the first playable character to actually have been found in history, and represented him in a way that is insulting to an entire culture.

quote:

Everything you quoted is from quests in games where the historical character is the quest GIVER. Those are not the main character of the games.

quote:

Yasuke existed and is being misrepresented, and he is the protaganist. That is the problem.

quote:

Davinci wasn't an assassin.

Alexander Graham Bell didn't invent a zip line.

Which one of those was a player character?

LINK

I saw this a few days ago, another Japanese historian (someone actually from Japan) who claims there is little doubt that Yasuke was a samurai, but that's never been my argument. The pearl clutching about a black man in our "promised" Japanese samurai game is absurd.

I’ve got no problem with anything you quoted of his and I agree about the problem. I’ve said the same myself in my posts. At this point it’s starting to feel like you’re just trolling

And again, here you go misattributing what has people up in arms. It’s not about a black man being in the game. It’s about Ubi changing their own precedent of having a playable main character from the culture of the setting

Ok. But just want to point this out

quote:

Nobody has ever said it had to be based on a historically accurate character

But tell me what difference does it make if it's a side character or main character when the AC games have never made an effort to make real or made up character true to life? And you can't mention skin color.

Japan had a population around 17 million in the 1500s and Ubisoft picks the 1 black guy during the time period as the protagonist along with a woman. They knew what they were doing. You just have to laugh at it.

I mean. . .right?

They knew what they were doing.

I am sure sicboy would say it was a completely neutral decision and wasn't pandering or virtue signaling in any way.

Because major corporations are all polly anna to the leftist crowd these days. . .which is straight up bonkers.

Except the last time there was this much of an uproar it was because they made a "black" Egyptian as a playable character. The voice actor for Bayek was on Reddit a while back, recounting the same backlash he was subjected to that the voice actor for Yasuke is going through, and he said it was a real dark time for him and doubted whether he was the right person for the role.

Bayek is probably the best protagonist in the entire series.

So I call bullshite.

I don't remember that at all.

A couple eyerolls, I guess. But a black person in Africa seems right.

And this board loved that game, as did neckbeard gamers the world over.

Origins is the reason we all bought Odyssey. . .it revived the series, albeit as something other than an AC game.

Right. But the ugliness came with the announcement of Bayek and the time leading up to it's release. So maybe people give this one a chance, first.

And like Salim said in that video, fans of the series, at the minimum, are at least intrigued about the direction of the story. It's a different choice, but an interesting one that could really pay off.

Or it can be bad. We'll have to wait and see.

ETA I do like Salim's point about these questions....it's OK to ask why. It's cool to have a dialogue. But what's behind a lot of these questions is what's ugly.
