Late last month, it was revealed that GameStop had been given the go-ahead by Sony to “open the floodgates” for “unlimited” PS4 pre-orders. Now, GameStop has had to close their floodgates, with the standard PS4 edition sold out on their website.

The pricier bundles are still available (limited to one per household), and you may be able to pre-order at your local store before their quota is filled, but it’s clear that stocks are now limited and if you plan on pre-ordering, the sooner you do it, the better. The Xbox One Day One Edition is also still available on GameStop, if you plan to pre-order it.

From what I can tell, I think a lot of people who had already preordered at Gamestop aren't getting consoles unless they feel like camping out.

I think "Unlimited" at Gamestop meant no organization at all until now.

Exactly

GameStop employee here.

Exact opposite at our store.
We only had 10 Xbox One allocations given to our store after E3. They sold out within the first 24 hours of being available. About a week later, they gave us another 6. Sold out within 48 hours. Once this happened, we either downscaled or removed Xbox One signage and ads. There is still a chance Microsoft may allot more to us, but we have no idea when that could (or if it actually will) happen.

We were told to take as many PS4 pre-orders as we could get until Sony told us to stop. Today, Sony told us to stop. Our store reserved around 50 PS4s before today.

Another GS employee here. Pretty much the same at our store. I think we got about 16 XB1 allocations too. I've been telling my customers to check back with us if they want one, because I figure they'll probably give us more, they just won't be the Day One edition.
I tried like heck to get people to go ahead and preorder the PS4 if they wanted one and this is exactly why. I told them we'd be able to take preorders until we were told to stop, and we would get no warning on it, but they said they'd get it later. I hate when people think we only care about getting a sale since we work at GS. Most of us are actually trying to help you! Guess that's what I get for being honest with my customers!

I didn't even consider Gamestop for my PS4 preordered. They're always a mess.

Amazon isn't taking launch day orders for the standard PS4 anymore but I was able to get the Watch Dogs bundle with launch day delivery. I at least know they're not full of it when I place my order.

So sounds like Sony went out of their way to make sure there would be a shortage of PS4's

No. It just sounds like they weren't exactly sure what kind of production they would have and also just wanted to get as many units out the door ASAP at whatever cost.

Might be some people that pre-ordered left out in the cold like during the PS3 launch or it might all work out for them.

Either way, just rushing hardware out the door is scary to me because of hardware failure potential (RROD, Yellow light) and bugs.

Definitely. I've now had both. YLoD last week led to my PS4 preorder, rather than waiting like I had planned.

I bought a PS4 just to have it. Not to play, just to ruin some fanbois shot at getting one early in the game. Once I feel like all the fanbois have their system, I will just turn it into a photo frame.

This is you. LINK Guy smashed it right in the face of everyone waiting in line for the console.

I posted this a few months ago on another gaming site.

As a former Gamestop manager I can assure you that Sony nor Gamestop can promise this nor will they live up to it. I can 100 percent promise you that on launch day there will be people that have shelled out full price for a pre ordered machine and will walk away with nothing but their money or a rain check.

Gamestop put their employees in this exact same boat last cycle and did nothing to help alleviate customer hate that was borderline riot like outside the store.

Well that is pretty shitty of Sony and Gamestop.

I can't remember, but did this happen last gen with pre-orders, or was it just that GS had a limited amount, no pre-orders, first come first serve?

The preorders were first come first serve at several locations. The store I purchased from allowed for 10 preorders.

I've never seen this amount of preorder stock available for a console launch. There is going to be some disappointed folks come launch day unless Sony and Microsoft pull off a miracle.

Gamestop (As far as my store and other in the Baton Rouge area) didn't cap the number of pre orders. While I myself was questioning how many units we would actually receive, I didn't think much of it because I never received any word from higher up that there would be a problem. Three days before launch we are receive about 4 60GB machine and 2 20GB machines. Og course this is far less than the nearly 28-30 in pre orders we took. So I had to go outside and inform already paid customers that not only did we not have their machine that they have been waiting for hours, we didn't have the money to refund them. People erupted in anger, and rightfully so. The machines went to the first 6 people that were standing by the door, and even they didn't feel safe leaving. I never felt like we were in immediate danger, but I would be lying if I said I felt safe.

After this I had several more problems with the way Gamestop management (particularly the Baton Rouge area)

But the mishandling of this event that ked to me leaving Gamestop.

Wow...

So knowing that there was no pre-order limit for the store, I wonder how many pre-orders the average GS took.

I heard the average was around 20 or so, but some stores (city stores) got as many as 40-50, and they would receive about 8-10.

Sorry, I mean this gen. I would assume it is much higher than 20-50.
