Does anyone else miss classic platformers?

Honestly there have been no great platformers in the past 10 years aside from the Mario series (which granted have mastered the genre). Platformers used to dominate, but are now an extremely rare breed. Anyone else wish they'd make a comeback?
And speaking of platformers, what are some of yall's favorites?

With technology in gaming advancing the way it has, a side scrolling platformer is a hard sell, unless you're Nintendo. That or reserved as an XBLA release, like Braid or Limbo. There are some developers that are still willing to put one out here and there, and honestly, I feel that's enough. You won't make a dent in the gaming market if you stick to only platformers.
Minus all the hours I've spent on Mario games, I'd say Super Contra. I actually beat it without the Konami code and without dying

Have you played the newer Mario games? Galaxy 1, 2, and New Super Mario Bros are all excellent. If you can't enjoy them, then you don't know fun. Granted, I'm guessing any fun game for you requires tons of blood and shooting. It honestly speaks for the lack of maturity of people who can't enjoy a Mario game rather than vice versa as they would like to think. Like Looney Tunes, Mario is something you should never be able to grow out of and enjoy at literally any age.

There are still great platformers, but everyone is busy playing CoD and Halo. Rayman Origins is supposed to be awesome, and a lot of great platformers come to the PC now as budget titles.

No doubt they are fun, but there are better games out there. Honestly, between Skyrim, The Show, NCAA FB, and this year I've decided to get Madden, I really don't have any gaming time left over.
Unless you count with my younger child, and she is into DDR and Wii Sports.

Very, very, very few games. A good list of the top 20 games of all time will likely include 4 Mario games.

Skyrim is great, but holy shite, if you think that these others hold a fricking candle to the Mario franchise, boy your taste in games suck. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, it was often described that one level would contain more creativity within it than was present in the vast majority of other games. You haven't said since 2003 that "hey I can't believe they had the balls and creativity to do this" or "how did they think this up". Anyone can make a football game. It takes someone of rare skill to make a good Mario, Zelda, or Metroid game. If NCAA games were so great, they wouldn't be instantly abandoned for next year's model. Seriously, who the frick is playing NCAA Football 2005 still? Bet I can find plenty playing older Mariokart games as well as pretty much any popular game Nintendo has developed.

Damn, wish I was such a bad arse like you to play NCAA football non-stop. That's a truly badass game that has challenged gameplay to the fullest extent.

Really its just you saying that football games that are literally forgotten from one year to the next are better than games that are pretty much never forgotten and can't be replaced. That just says to me a guy doesn't really know what he's talking about with gaming. Mario's major games will be remembered and played for many decades to come. Can't say the same for the NCAA games. People will just continue to play the newest game and forget the one they just played. Sorry, but great games just don't fade like that any more than great films do.
Its been almost 20 years since ALttP has been released, but people still very much remember and still play that game. Millions still play Mariokart 64. Who still plays NCAA 2005 though? Pretty much no one? That's more the sign of a great game is one that is still played a decade later, not the game of the week which you seem to be into.

I play Mario 64 through 120 stars multiple times per year. I can't help myself, when I pick it up and start a new story I play for 3 hours before I know what has happened and I'm upstairs climbing a mountain on a floating island in the sky trying to get my hat back from some damn monkey!

Platformers in general are an Indie niche now, which should be fine for everyone.
You can find them on Steam, the Xbox Live arcade, or even for free download from a developer's personal blog.
Maybe nostalgia is too weighted in your criteria for "classic" games. We can't go back to the 80s or 90s, so I guess you'll have to deal with the highly-rated games of this genre released by independent teams every year.

Yeah, weighted nostalgia is kind of heavy handed here. I haven't played an N64 game other than the occasional SSB because I've moved on and see value in today's games.
