In US News ranking of National Universities USC is 5th in the conference behind
#14 Vandy
#35 UF
#46 UGA
#66 TAMU

USC is #106. Last time I recall looking at this list USC was ranked behind those above as well as UA, AU and I think maybe UT and LSU as well.

I don’t know the criteria for the ranking or what may have changed at USC but the state of South Carolina has one of the fastest growing populations in the country (creating a bigger pool of quality students) and I think USC may be increasing its out of state admittance numbers.....the school makes more money from out of state students and out of state enrollees tend to have better scores don’t they?

We've got deals with certain states where we allow in state tuition on majors their flagships do not offer. Maryland has had a pipeline down here in recent years and it's been a great revenue boost plus a higher quality student because we are pickier with who we take.

Our Honors College is second to none among public universities.

The school has come a lonnnnnnng ways over the years and continues to get better every year.

When we finally get over that Research hurdle we're going to take off like an Atlas rocket. This next President is being chosen to get us there and over the hurdle hopefully.

This explains the surprisingly large amount of Gamecock fans I've met in DC.

Maybe I'm old school, but USC is a state-run institution whose primary objective should be to educate SC students. If the Yankees want to go to school down here, ship their asses to CCU.

Maryland has the pipeline? I could have sworn from my time at Carolina it would have been New Jersey. I roomed with 3 jersey boys in bates west my freshman year and over half of my floor came from jersey.

You must have been there with me in 70s? Yeah, we were loaded with NJ and NY kids.

Maryland is #1 these days I was told recently.

At my time it was NY/NJ (I’ll just group them the same)
Ohio and DMV

And this was within the last 5 years

I would say Boston/NE too (the fraternity Chis Psi was basically all New England kids)

Probably can’t get into college?

Or just not going.

Tuition so expensive and student loan debt so high, probably better off for them going to a trade school or something

I was a freshman at USC in 2003. My pledge class was 14 kids from SC, 1 from GA and 2 from TX. Almost all the kids I knew at the time not from SC were from NC, GA or maybe VA. Now it seems like most kids at USC are Yankees. I don't want my alma mater to turn into Rutgers South.

Does the state of SC have a rule that a certain percentage need to be from In State?
I know NC is like that. Think all state schools need to be 70% or some other number of NC kids

Ohio and DMV

I may be wrong and I'll double check but I think she told us Ohio was number two. Maryland then Ohio.

As it was explained to us we have paid recruiters actually working those two states, along with Michigan who I seem to remember was #3 maybe ... but we have paid recruiters working those states trying to pull some of their best and brightest outta there with the lure of lower tuition.

The objective is to build a stronger alumni base will to give back and to raise our SAT standards. It's all about building toward becoming a research University like Mizzou, Vandy and Florida.

ETA: The wife just woke up to go do her thing and when she came back to bed I asked if she remembered what Wes and one of his girls told us at the fall dinner.

I was wrong.

We are up to 45% of our enrollment of 50k ... are out of state students.

She said they told us Georgia is #1, North Carolina #2, Maryland #3, Virginia #4, Ohio #5, Michigan #6, and she thinks New Jersey is #7 ... or either New York but she may be getting the New Jersey and New York thing confused with what they told us about Coastal Carolina.

She said we are now the #3 fastest growing flagship University in the country but we're leveling off until we build more classrooms and housing.

She reminded me what they told us about why they take so many out of state students. She said it's because we make more money on out of state students plus a lot of them stay and live and work here in SC afterwards. Also, it brings millions and millions of dollars into the local economy when parents and family come to visit them. Some mumblings then she turned the light back off and told me to leave her alone so she can go back to sleep because she has a meeting in the morning then woke up to ask me if I set the alarm and would I go get her a bottle of water.

lol ... I love this woman. She doesn't miss a beat. Even half asleep.

Oh, and she said, and I remember this, that the SAT standards have gone up so much that fewer instate students are qualifying and that's a major problem state legislators are going to be addressing next year ... and they'll probably do something to frick it all up.

I do know that Pastides made some enemies being very critical of our public education system in this state but our board argues that there are plenty of other schools in state that students can attend who do not qualify for our main campus.

ETA2: She just woke up and rolled over and told me a couple of other things I just didn't remember. She said the program was encouraged by Bob McNair several years ago and is named something like Importing Academic Intellectuals or something like that. She said I was nodding off when they were talking about this ... they said that while SAT standards have been raised it's been at a cost to instate applicants who no longer qualify, especially African-Americans, and that African-American enrollment at USC is down something like 10% since 2008 and those people are raising hell about it and want back in. But it's been such a book for the university that we don't want it changed and will fight it with state legislators during the next few sessions.

She also said McNair was proud of how many Texans are now enrolling at South Carolina, as well as Californians, and he always reminded everyone that he was an out of state students ... especially when he gave the school $30 million dollars.

I kinda do remember something about that but I also remember her elbowing me in the ribs that night because she claimed my head flopped back and I started snoring when Wes was talking ... and everyone laughed, which I kinda remember.

Anyways, this has been an interesting conversation.

A lot of things are going to change with this next President.

Interesting stuff Rooster. As I said in my OP and you also said, the University makes more money from out of state students. I wasn’t aware of all the other positives to an OOS student that you mentioned.

I have a relative who is retired from USC and still attends annual “State of USC” meetings. She told me several years ago the speaker said at a meeting that USC’s public funding from state government is below 10% of the cost per student. So apparently 90% of USC’s budget is coming from sources other than state government.

I assume all state schools are in the same situation as USC regarding lack of public funding. If you check student enrollment at Coastal Carolina I think you’ll see they are now over 50% out of state students.

It might be hard for state government to threaten state schools to force more in state students and/or minority students if the state is providing so little funding.

Regarding in state enrollment and increasing diversity, the University of Texas does something interesting. A buddy who lives in Dallas told me that to be admitted to UT a stident must finish in the top 10% of graduating class. So, no matter how poor the high school may be, if a kid graduates from an awful high school but finishes top 10% then that kid gets into UT over a kid that was just outside of 10% but at a highly regarded high school.

My buddy’s step daughter went to a highly regarded private all girls high school in Dallas with almost perfect high school scores, but due to the quality of student at the high school she didn’t graduate in top 10%. She couldn’t get into UT. She did however get into Notre Dame, a higher rated school academically.

Georgia does something like that too I believe.
(well when I was in school)

If you had a certain GPA and SAT from the State of Georgia you got into UGA.

Probably why they denied me.

Also good on your friend ND is one of the best business schools in the country.

Def one of the top non-Ivys. Work with a few of them, they good peeps.

IBG - aren’t you working in Manhattan in finance? My friend’s stepdaughter that went to Notre Dame is a financial analyst in Manhattan. She’s been up there since she graduated from ND, about 4 years. Her fiancé, also a ND grad, works there as well.

My friend’s stepdaughter is one of those people who makes a person feel like they’re not doing nearly enough with their life. She walked on to Notre Dame’s women’s soccer team and ended up winning a national championship with them, works on Wall Street, decided to start running marathons after college and recently timed just a couple minutes slow in the Chicago Marathon from qualifying for Olympic trials.

yes there are many of them (shes probably my age)
I like them, good people. They certainly aren't crazy like the bandwagon fans that just jump on the ND train because they are Irish Catholics.

I'll be honest, I didn't use USC as my way to get into Finance I had a family friend that got me a job down in Charlotte who then moved me to NY as a promotion to the "front office." I haven't really crossed paths with many USC grads at any of the banks or my clients, but it makes it a good talking point because I'm unique.

ND has a VERY large alumni base here and in the industry, as does Michigan and Penn State (among the non Ivys in that region). It's one thing that I've always laughed at when they try to get Rutgers incorporated here.

NYC (well in my time here which is about 3ish years) has always had a Big Ten contingent/following here. And it certainly aint Rutgers.

It's a cut throat industry for sure, def gotta run (which I've began to more as I certainly didn't in college) because you're sitting (or standing) at a desk for 13-14 hours a day.

Not sure when you applied, but I was the GA kid in SCL's pledge class, and this wasn't accurate in the early Aughts. The state of GA paid your tuition if you kept a GPA above 3.+ while attending a state school, but it made it harder to get in, not easier. We saw admissions standards skyrocket for GT and UGA in the late 90s, and it hasn't gotten any better.

I got in to UGA and USC, but USC's scholarship package was, for an out of state student, very competitive with the UGA/HOPE package. I wanted out of Georgia, so off to Carolina I went.
