Don't complain. I'm dog sitting a fetus. Went to no kill shelter after golf today and brought home a puppy that should still be nursing but mom dog is dead.
It looks like a black lab mix but is the size of a small squirrel. She ate some rice today. Pooped and piddled on the tile. Made friends with old dog.
Re: dinner... I had the rest of the filet mignon. Also the last of the pasta. Lucy had the same while I was golfing. Gotta do some major cooking tomorrow.
As I recall, tiny pups can eat human baby food...like Gerbers. Anybody got ideas on that?

Awww....I'm so glad you rescued the pup and that the pup is making friends with Good Old Dog.
I don't know about nursing puppies and what to feed them. I had a kitten once who couldn't eat on it's own yet and I had to dropper sort of feed it a few weeks. Does the puppy still need to get the milk it's missing? What were they feeding at the shelter?

IF you have to syringe feed be extremely careful. Use it like a dropper and done squirt it in. You could shoot it down to the lungs and kill them from pneumonia (foreign body pneumonia I think)

Don't know. The shelter was in chaos. I'm gonna try some warm milk tonight. I was wondering about grits. The pup really liked the rice.
But for protein I was thinking about human baby food. You can buy baby food that says 'meat' but it's emulsified. I've had dogs all my life but never one this close to actual birth.

I don't have to syringe feed. She ate rice off a flat plate. I do need to give her a syringe dose of anti worm meds that they gave me. That led to a funny encounter:
Me: The people said you need to give her a shot tomorrow.
Lucy: A shot? I don't know how to give a puppy a shot.
Me: You work in the hospital and give shots to people. Just do it smaller.
Lucy: You moron. This syringe is for mouth injection.
Me: Oh, my bad.

I wouldn't use people milk and there are some human foods that aren't good for dogs and probably worse for puppies, though I know you feed your dogs human food. Garlic and onions, I think are not good. I'd get canine milk like Wink posted. I got kitten milk for the kitten. I recall reading that some baby foods had ingredients that were bad for cats. Don't know about those for dogs. Probably need to wet some dry food with the canine milk, but don't leave it out. It can grow organisms not too safe, at least, not for cats. Don't know about dogs.
I'd recommend calling a vet. Don't want to mess up the pup's insides. I think they poo pretty soon after they eat, too. FYI.

I mentioned that to the director. She said that people bring small pups to the vet too soon. They existed before vets did and they survived.
She recommended waiting two weeks before a vet visit. If this pup can eat rice I'll bet it can eat some grits. Gonna make some tonight. Thanks for all the advice.
