Siegen Lane

So, they just basically built another liquor store in the hood, except this liquor store is Walmart sized.....

If you don't believe Siegen is in the hood, just drive down that road around 11:00 on any given Saturday......

Sorry to be cliche, but is there any part of EBR proper that isn’t hood? No matter where I go in this town, hood seems to have encroached. It’s just the degree to which it’s there.

Define “hood”. Because the only definition that would make your statement “true” is “there is a black person within eyesight.” And if so, maybe it’s time for some soul searching.

The one known for playing ridiculous games with allocated items? That has loyal customers for years and then shits on them?

Man. Must be tough being in the biz. If only there was a way to entice people to frequent your store, buy all their groceries and booze there so they can earn the right to buy your marked up liquor, then suddenly not sell them the same product they've bought there for years despite their playing the game. Geeze, how else can you make a buck? I hear the margins on kale are shite.

Calandro’s

I have very little personal beef there, I don’t deal with that market, but I’ve heard enough crappy stories from people who have sworn off them entirely. On the off chance that I pass through BR, I’d go literally anywhere else just on principle

Calandro’s has always had a slightly odd vibe for me, like they weren’t quite sure what they wanted to be. They had a great beer selection long before it had really caught on, though, so I’ll give them that

Calandros are always the first to cry at any perceived disruption despite being anti-customer going way back.

The meat is good their liquor department has been a shite show forever. They gave up on beer a long time ago.

And no bullshite to get good bottles, if it’s there grab it, no reindeer games with allocations.

TW has a lottery a couple times a year. I’ve been grand reserve level for 5 years and have never gotten shite. That said, plenty of bottles that would be allocated somewhere else are not at TW. Michters Products, Elijah Craig 18, Yama 12, hakushu 12, etc… can be found on the shelf or visible behind the counter for purchase at the stores up here. Can also always find Buffalo Trace products but those are everywhere in Washington. BT, Eagle Rare, EH Taylor, etc.

No Josh. Unlike you, I don’t associate “hood” with black people. I associate it with people of any ethnicity that make a place dirty, trashy, unsafe, or an imposition to visit. I define hood as any place where homeless, vagrants, panhandlers, or people who behave in a thuggish or boorish manner are present. Their skin color is irrelevant.
Try some soul searching as to why you assumed I was talking about black people. You’re a racist.

I quit shopping there when the owner said we wouldn’t be served if we didn’t have a mask.
Rouses works just fine. TW will supplement my special alcohol purchases with great prices.

Then you’re simply wrong, and lack reading comprehension skills. Plenty of areas in town aren’t in the least bit “hood” by your definition.

I don't understand what he's pissed about. There are about a dozen groceries within 3 miles. If he's upset that he's going to lose his bourbon business then he will have to learn to adapt.

Survival of the fitness.

Wife and I shop at calandos (mid city) and Calvin's daily. The convenience and personal relationships is great, but obviously the prices are higher with less overhead. Not to mention narrow arse isles.

You are 100% correct. A business has to adapt and change.

Why is he pissed? Because if you owned a family business who has been part of the local community for decades, lived in the community, spent money in the community, supported kids baseball teams, donated to the fundraiser for the guy with cancer, etc, you wouldn’t want to see the same people who live in the community with you talking up a national chain that hasn’t yet put a dime into the community.

Is he right to be mad? No, because as you said, it’s business. But it’s easy to UNDERSTAND why and I won’t laugh at him for it. Makes perfect sense to me.

His family has a local business. That’s awesome. We need more local companies. You don’t have to support him. But it’s awesome when you do.
