Middendorf's became famous for it, but the last two times I went to Middendorf's the prices were really high and the quality of the fish wasn't great. I recently ate at New Orleans Hamburger and Seafood Company. I got the thin cut catfish and thought it was really good, much better than Middendorf's. The price wasn't bad either. I think it was $11.65 on the menu, but they were running a special so it was only $9.99. There were probably five or six nice size slices of fish on the platter, their delicious butter soaked fries, great French bread, and some of my favorite coleslaw. I was more than pleased and count it as the best deal I've gotten at a restaurant on St. Charles in quite some time, possibly ever. Where else can you find thin cut fried catfish?

Speaking of St. Charles Ave., that Shreveport chain seafood restaurant at the corner of Napoleon where the old Copelands was, is about to open. It might open within a couple of weeks. They're doing the finishing touches and there is a now hiring sign. I doubt you have to pay $25 to apply. I don't know if I'll ever go. Superior is terrible and it's the same owners. They'll do a successful money making thing there, but I can't imagine the food will be good. With Zea's, NO Hamburger and Seafood, Copelands' Cheesecake, Superior, Houston's, and this new place, St. Charles is taking on a certain chainy feel.

Absolutely. It's unexpected, but that place does some damn good fried catfish.

Cafe Reconcile is good, but I remember it being pretty thick-cut.

Have you eaten at Superior Steakhouse in Shreveport?

If they're smart they'll be open before NYE and/or the BCS title game weekend.

It seems it's become sort of cool to hate on this place of late. I've never had anything but a great experience here.

The N.O. Hamburger and Seafood isn't bad, but it's nowhere on the same level as Middendorf's.

Mike Anderson's is my favorite for thin cut. While not quite as thin, Dons and Parrains are very good. You get a lot more food at Parrains.

Only reason I could see anyone would have something negative to say about it is if they got their plate to-go and didn't eat it until they landed at home/work and the fish had gotten soggy.

Spahr's in Des Allemand's.

They use fresh locally caught Catfish, not that farm raised fish that taste like dirt.

Precisely why I never order fried catfish. Just one of those things that will never compare to the homemade version.

I have no reason to hate Middendorf's. I have a lot of very fond childhood memories there. I used to love it. But the last two times, the fish was really greasy. Straightly, it wasn't very good. Perhaps the reason for the recent rash of complaints is that the quality there has decreased while the prices have gone up.

Sphar's, on the other hand, has always, IMO, been bad. I have never enjoyed my experience there, though, it has only been two or three times. If it existed closer to restaurant competition, I don't think it would survive.

Not sure how long ago but within the last few years middendorfs changed ownership, i haven't been in a while but that may have something to do with it.

If anything, I'd say it's gotten a bit better and more consistent since the new owners came aboard.

It's Horst Pfeiffer (who was formerly the chef/owner of Bella Luna in New Orleans) and his wife.

The last time I ordered the thin fried catfish at Middendorf's it was paper thin. Many people I know also complain of the thin fish. I disected a piece just to see if any fish was in there and sure enough there was a paper thin slice of fish that I could see through. The batter is what gets it over. The thin fried fish, in my opinion, is a gimmick they started years ago to increase profits. They take one big thick fillet and slice it paper thin, put a good batter on it, stack it up high on the plate to create the illusion that you are getting a lot. Add great tasting tarter sauce and it is a gimmick that made the original owners filty rich.

I do, however, love Middendorf's fried soft shell crabs as they are my favorite. The stuffed crabs are, by far, the best I have ever had.

Catfish chip ftw

I think they do a partial freeze on the fish and slice it on a meat cutter to get thin chips of fish. Yum

I've been eating at Middendorfs for forty five years and have had everything on the menu and all is good and as good today as ever. I'm a fan of the thin fried but if you don't like it look below it on the menu and order the thick which is the same price.

When it was sold the old black lady that cuts the thin fish was guaranteed her job and works there still.

And I'm a fan of Spahrs catfish chips.
