La Panaderia

We had breakfast here on our way out of town. The place was busy so you know it's good & patronized by locals.

I guess they use salt?

You can do a badass margarita crawl at the Pearl ending at the Hotel Emma bar.

Ray’s Drive Inn is our favorite hole in the wall joint for the aforementioned puffy tacos.

It's not in San Antonio and it's only open for dinner, but Verde in Bulverde is incredible.

They don't have a huge menu, but they do have live music on the weekends and they smoke their cocktails.

If you go to the Pearl District, be sure to take a look and see what they’re serving at the CIA. Students cook it, and it’s grab and go, but I had some great fish tacos there.

There is a LaFonda’s there, no relation to BR or Lafayette locations. Had it 10 years ago. Was nice then. Another Mexican rest that had outdoor seating and was very fun. Don’t remember name. Similar to Joe T. Garcia’s. Finally, there was a USA style diner with great onion rings that I found on Guy Fietti’s show. In old part of town.

we went to the onion ring place...it was like stepping back into the early 80s. Chicken Fried Steak, Onion rings, and homemade ranch dressing was great.

Mi Tierra at El Mercado is good and the bakery is a plus. Wait will probably be long. La Margarita at El Mercado is also good.

Excellent suggestions.

San Antonio's Pig Stand restaurant is one of only a handful left in the chain. (Some 130 restaurants opened in the 1920s-30s.)

From the San Antonio Pig Stand's Web site: "In the initial years the [San Antonio] Pig Stand pioneered several food items: Texas toast, deep-fried onion rings, and the country-fried steak sandwich. Not only was the Pig Stand the first restaurant to offer curb and drive-through service, it also was among the first to use fluorescent lighting, neon signs, and air conditioning." The current owner of this location, Mary Ann Hill, started as a waitress here at age 18 in 1967.

I believe puffed tacos were invented in SA and have since spread around. They still do the best around there.
