Organizing a blind bourbon tasting *** Results on Page 1 ***

Should have about 12-14 different varieties, with probably 5 of those being Ryes.
Each person will pour their own bottle(s), so as not to reveal the brands to everyone else tasting.
Looking for recommendations on how to base the scoring? What categories should we rate, etc. I'd estimate the majority of the group to be in the "intermediate" range of experience with whiskey tasting.
I'm thinking quarter ounce pours, for obvious reasons. May have to split the tasting into two sessions (bourbons and ryes)? Any advice is appreciated!
If there's interest, I'll share the results after we do this. Thanks in advance

Maybe have people write down notes on each and do a power ranking at end of tasting...might be fun to see who has what in their top 3 etc.
Also, I've been to a tasting where we went around and talked about what tasting notes we picked up and when everyone said what they wanted, read the distillers notes. Was pretty fun and interesting to see how our notes compared and contrasted with those.
enjoy!!

Unless you taste whiskey for a living, don't bother with a score.
I would have everyone write the following on each:
Aroma
Tasting notes
Type of whiskey they think it is
Then have each person rank them in order.

Done many of these. Some tips:
- Make sure you're up to date with local ADA requirements (Wide walkways, have ramps installed to replace stairs
-Plenty of water bowls for the seeing eye dogs. Maybe some treats/nylabones to keep them busy.
-listing of all Bourbons on notecards in Braille (it can be exhausting to repeat the bourbon names 50+ times)

Absolutely this. Makes the event fun and humbles a few at the same time!

You're good people. I'll keep these tips in mind. Inclusivity is the name of the game.

Would make for a good laugh if Evan Williams made everyone's top 3

We ended up having 16 different bourbons and did a blind taste test where we rated the aroma, taste, and finish of each.
Included were:
Weller 107
Weller Special Reserve
Eagle Rare
Elijah Craig
IW Harper 15
High West Prairie
Angel's Envy Finished Rye
Basil Hayden's
Willett
Larceny
Cooper's Craft
Woodford
Four Roses Single Barrel
1792 full proof
Wathens
Wild Turkey 101
The results were quite surprising
The consensus top tier (there were six of us, so there would occasionally be outliers) were:
Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig, 1792FP, IW Harper and Wild Turkey 101
The overall winner was WT101.
The lowest were Wathens, Larceny and FR single barrel.
All in all it was a great time, with surprising results.

Yep, its pretty interesting to see how your brain and taste buds change when you know/dont know what your drinking makes it taste better or worse.

Yep. There were a lot of "Well, I'm never ordering Woodford/hunting for Weller again" type comments. Scoring also became much more casual around bourbon number 10

Someone brought it, so we tasted and scored it. You're right, I should have relabeled everything. Dork

Everyone at some point in their bourbon journey will come to the realization that WT101 is tGOAT.
Welcome to the club brother. Stop chasing overhyped weller and enjoy the WT101, Elijah Craig, and Eagle Rare that sit on shelves every day for great prices.
Let the taters tate themselves in a frenzy over the rare bourbonzzz.

For price, quality, and overall availability, I am now in agreement.

Maker's Mark
WT101
Buffalo Trace
for me, there's no need to stay from this Trifecta .
