i'm not sure how anyone eats this. I've tried it every way possible and I just can't get past the "slime".

You haven't had fried okra.
I grew up on okra so I love it.

No.
I understand its purpose in gumbo which is to thicken it up, but I really don't care for it on its own.
For instance, I had dinner at Charley G's in Lafayette recently, and the fry on the okra in my dish was perfect...still didn't care for it.

I put rotel In mine to eliminate the slime.. Or you can add a little vinegar.

No one cares if you like or don't like okra.

It just has that "loogie" texture that grosses me out to the max.

If your fried okra wasn't good, the cook didn't know what she/he was doing.

Well now that you describe it that way...
I fricking love okra... I smother it down with tasso for a meal pretty often.

Grilled okra w/ a yakitori sauce is damn tasty and has no slime.

I like fried okra. Grew some in the garden a couple of years ago. The deer came in the night and ate it all. Deer love okra.

Started grilling it a couple years ago and love it that way too. Favorite is smothered down with fresh tomatoes.

Whoever is serving it to you doesn't know what they are doing. Vinegar is your friend when smothering okra or eating it boiled.

I like pickled okra in a Bloody Mary.

There is a way to remove the slime.. I think it might be par boiling them prior to frying.
I am not certain though.
When done right with the right crispy breading and no slime, they are fantastic.
