Going to be spending the weekend in NOLA Labor Day with the wife and staying at Le Pavillon. Looking to try something off the beaten path. Over the years we’ve been to Commanders Palace, GW Fins, August, Luke, Prudhommes, Emerils, and others around the Quarter. Some of those are great but crowded, loud and over priced however the food and service are still good at most.

Where do you NOLA baws go when you and the wife go out for a nice dinner where you can hear each other and enjoy some good food? Love seafood, Cajun, steak, Italian, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Mexican and German food.

Update: went to Maypop this weekend and got there early for happy hour. We had some small plates and drinks and the food was awesome. I actually think the small plates were better than the entree in taste and value. We had shrimp buns, curry chicken wings, and boat noodles for happy hour. I got the Tom Yum shrimp and clams for an entree and my wife got a braised pork shoulder. Both were good but my dish had 2 shrimp and 2 small clams. The wife’s pork was 40% fat. Get the small plates if you can. Thanks baws for the recommendation. I would definitely go back again.

We swear by N7. We've had multiple nice meals there. It's a French place in the Bywater with a great wine selection. Off the beaten path -- you'll think you're in a French village. The mussels are great, the steak au poivre is really good. Depending on how much y'all drink, you should be able to get out of there for around $100-$140, which is about right for the quality and atmosphere. Make reservations.

Agree on N7. The OP should consider getting out of the downtown area. Avo on Magazine is a solid choice. Carrollton Market and Coquette are another two that I really like.

We also had a nice meal at Lola's for my wife's 40th. It's a Spanish place. Quiet neighborhood joint. Good wine list, it's also next to a little market with a great wine selection. I think they're cool about you bringing bottles over. Great paella.

Lola is a good place. If you like Spanish food you need to hit up Costera.

Thanks for the recommendations guys. These kinds of places are what I’m looking for. Out of the hustle and bustle while serving great food and service.

I’m a simple man at heart and love me some Popeyes. What wine pairs well with the chicken sandwich?

We just did an eating and drinking weekend in NO a few weeks back, Paladar 511 and a new place on Rampart called Palm and Pine were the group favorites. Can’t recommend both enough.

If you have to eat around the tourist area, Bon Ton is my go-to place. Family run since the 50s and hasn't changed a bit.

Dante’s kitchen is great and local scene. Also coquette. Love Peche also.

Dante’s kitchen been closed for a while now.

OP, lots of great advice in the thread. Also check out Marjie’s, Red’s Chinese, Luvi, and a new spot that I had an excellent meal recently, Thalia.

Not out of the way, but Couvant is a great option if you’re looking for great food with a quieter atmosphere. Go early and have drinks in the lobby bar.
