Is there anything on the menu there that I should stay away from?

Meh..I don't know what you should stay away from.
BUT they have this kick arse salmon dip that isn't on the menu anymore. If you like salmon, you'll love this.
And the carrot cake for dessert is awesome.

Which is better: J. Alexander's or Houston's?

J Alexander by a mile. Never a bad meal at the BR location in over 30 trips (only location I've been to).
Houston's in Nawlins, overrated. Have had 2 decent to good meals, and 2 bad. Also, overpriced per portion. Would rather some Phoenicia, or whatever the name of the Middle Eastern joint in the rear of the strip mall..good kabobs.

have you asked them if they still have it? i always get the bbq chicken - not on menu anymore but still fix it. they say they still offer many items that just are not listed anymore. mac and cheese is great.

My wife says she has the recipe for this and it's made with sour cream and chocolate pudding, which is why the cake is so moist.

Today, J Alexanders.
But in the 90's, Houston's was pretty good too.

Grilled fish sandwich. Had this the last time I ate at a J Alexander's (the one outside the Riverchase Galleria Mall in Hoover, AL) and it's the only time I've ever had food poisoning. I spent the half the night (when I wasn't unleashing my insides) curled up in a ball on the bathroom floor in agony. No more J Alexander's for me thank you. Having said that, the few times prior to that the place had pretty good food.

Sorry to hear that. I went on New Years day and had the Rattlesnake Pasta. My wife and I went and wanted a snack, so we split it. Never ordered it before and is was very, very good. We had leftovers after we both had our fill...

I did about 6-7 years in food service (both front and back of the house) and J. Alexanders was always the freshest, most consistent, and well run restaurant I was ever in. And I've done everything from Chilis to CCLA.
All the bases, soups, and salad dressings are made fresh every morning. Every burger served is ground the same day. Every menu item is cooked and tested prior to opening every day. The servers (used to be) are held to very high standards when evaluated. When I left (9+ years) they were actually ranking each server based on non financial perfomrmance meausres (mostly timing and teamwork tests) and providing incentives for the top and putting the bottom on probation for replacement.
I've seen alot of shitholes, and that place was impressive in how it operated.
