These are exactly the kind of meals I was raised on.

Know how I know you're not far from the Mississippi Delta?

Me too. Shouts out memories of my mom and her mom.

I live in Clinton, but mom grew up in Isola, MS. Dad outside of Hollandale. Do you know where those towns are? Not much more delta than them.

There's no way of knowing how many times I saw my dad pick a fresh tomato, slice it up, Dash little salt on it, and have it for a snack.

You still able to pick up stuff from the county farm?

My grandparents live about 5 miles from there down on Oakley-Palestine Road so I've eaten my fair share of their food from the farm.

Nice pics as always.

Gawd that looks mighty good. My favorite LSU-MSU game was back in late '70s in Starkville. We had "lunch" in campus cafeteria. This was before "farm-to-table" etc. It was absolutely the best real-time cooking ever. For whatever reason, the black eyed peas stand out in my mind. I can't remember why exactly. But a nap on a front porch would have been a classic ending. LSU won the game that day. But MSU definitely won the Southern hospitality that day.

The tomatoes I show came from there (Yesterday) as did the okra. They still have lots of both and I think they will for some time, since they planted maybe 200 plants that have tennis ball sized fruit and we are getting rain.

I could have bought a bushel of okra yesterday and IMO, okra makes well right up to frost, which should still be some time out. They still have yellow squash and they have what appear to be nice bottles of pepper sauce. I am not a big fan of pepper sauce, but it does look nice.

Oh and they have boiled peanuts both regular and what the deputy called Cajun. They were both ok, but I like to boil my own peanuts and you can buy nice green peanuts from lots of places here.

I try to limit my boiled peanuts to three or four times during the green season due to calories. My dad always said, "Son, you need to remember that they use peanuts to fatten up hogs in Georgia."

Be careful HTiger. We will wind up being related and that will hurt your reputation .

I still have relatives living in Belzoni. I had an uncle and aunt that owned a butcher shop and small grocery store there. Had another uncle who ran the tractor barn at the M.T. Reid plantation in the years before and while they were building 2,000 + acres of catfish ponds, when that industry was just starting.

We were in Belzoni (at Sky Lake WMA - Cypress Swamp) recently. Back in the 50s and 60s, Belzoni was where folks in Isola went to shop - maybe Hollandale, if they couldn't get to Greenville. I remember when they had two Chinese Groceries in Isola (called Chinaman groceries back then). My memories of that part of Mississippi are youthful days when we enjoyed being there with cousins for a few days, and never for a full summer. Honestly I can never remember being bored. Maybe I was just a country kid from Jackson, out in the country of Isola.
