Recently found out an old friend and her husband own the place so I stopped in for lunch. Place is solid, imo.

Comped me with a fried green tomato with ettoufe app. Then had an oyster poboy with fries. Plus they have liquor license.

If you're anywhere nearby I'd recommend it.

So I've tried to go to Avery's at least six times on weekdays, and I've never-ever-ever found a legal parking space within 8-10 blocks. I wonder if onstreet parking has eased since the hospital opened up?

they have parking behind the building now. I'm a big fan of this place. Best BBQ shrimp in town. They have really good specialty po boys like buffalo shrimp and buffalo gator. Haven't had the soft shell but my friend said it's the bet he's had in town.

whaaaa? that's being a bit dramatic, no? Think the farthest I've ever parked was 1 block.

Thanks for the tip on parking...I might finally get to try the fried potato salad.

Avery's is really good. Not just po-boys, but excellent plate lunches too. Park behind the building.

Availed myself of Avery's parking lot yesterday...sampled the seafood gumbo, chicken/andouille gumbo, onion rings, and fried potato salad. Both gumbos were tasty, with good depth of flavor (and my seafood bowl included shrimp, a couple of little oysters, and a crab claw). Tempura battered onion rings were a disappointment--soggy, with a "steamed" texture rather than any deeper flavor or crisping. They went soggy within seconds of landing on our table.

Sleeper hit was the fried potato salad. It reminded me of a Cuban style ham croqueta, and my cajun self has a marked preference for warm potato salad. My dining companion thought it was gross, though...

Will go back and try some poboys next time.
