Auction advice: calling anyone who’s spent 55% of funds on 2 RBs

I’m drafting in my only auction league tomorrow night and am looking for some advice. Quick league notes: 12 teams, 0.5 PPR, $200 to spend in auction, QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/TE/Flex/K/Def starting lineup.

I know auctions require the ability to be reactive and flexible, so none of this is by any means set in stone, but my current strategy going in is to try and get 2 top-10 RBs. Thought being that I like the mid-round WRs way more than the mid-round RBs. Has anyone taken a similar approach and spent the equivelant of maybe $110 of their $200 salary on getting a RB pair like Kamara/Gordon?

I’m not at all an auction pro, so I’m wondering if this will over-extend my budget to the point where I’m completely priced out of the middle tier players. Is anyone who’s taken this approach happy with their roster? Anyone hate it?

Thanks for all help/advice

IMO/experience, you'll have to spend ~25% to get the top end guys (Bell, Brown, maybe Zeke and DJ). However, it also depends on the order they're put up. In my experience, the earlier a guy is put up the more he goes for. So if you're targeting Kamara and Gordon, try to get guys like Brown, Bell, Zeke, even Hopkins and DJ put up for auction first. Typically, that'll make the guys looking to blow it out on one guy do it before you, and you will have a better chance getting someone like Kamara for 15% of your budget or so.

All that being said, if you have to pay 55% for the 2 guys you mentioned, it's not terrible value, but you'll have to hit well on later round WRs.

On page 4 they have the results of our TD Auction league. I've done another auction this year and both times I didn't like the teams that had the best RB combo. I liked the second best combo. In the TD results you can see the team with Bell and Barkley didn't have the money for WR that the guy that took Cook and Gordon. The lower end of the RB 1s pairing up left money for him to get Gronk and some medium WR talent.

I love an auction draft. I kill it every time. I make a list and break the players into tiers and sort them by position. I usually go for value over most everything. Once I start running out of players in top tiers, I’ll mix it up and get someone for fair value or overbid. So my strategy usually misses out on the leveons, Zekes, kamaras. They usually have emotional attachment to some players anyway and get overbid. My team is stacked though. Just lost McKinnon for the year but I’ve still got depth everywhere. I left al Morris on the waiver wire and would have left brieda there too. Both would have been dead last on my depth chart. 12 team standard

I stick to my list and try not to get suckered in to getting a player for really cheap who I think will have a down year

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I went in looking to get 2 lower end RB1s, but ended up with what felt like great values on some elite runners. Ended up with David Johnson for $60 (Bell, Gurley, and Zeke all went for 65+) and Gordon for $47 (which I think was the steal of the draft - cheaper than Hunt, Cook, Fournette, and even Freeman). Had to be patient in the middle rounds with the large front end costs, but ended up saving enough to get plenty of depth. Full roster and prices below:

QB - Garappolo - 10
WR - Hilton - 27
WR - Hogan - 11
RB - Johnson - 60
RB - Gordon - 47
TE - Njoku - 8
Flex - Funchess - 8
BN - Brieda - 4
BN - Rivers - 5
BN - Carson - 2
BN - Kittle - 3
BN - Lockett - 2
BN - Barber - 2
BN - Godwin - 5

Thanks for the advice everyone. All things considered, pretty happy with this squad. Feeling good about my playoff odds. I appreciate the help.

Peyton Barber for $2 is a steal. Borderline top 10 back.

I agree. Well, maybe not top 10 good, but definitely a steal haha.

Same with chris carson. Some of the default values in the draft window were terrible (barber and carson were both $1 values), so I think a number of folks just forgot about them until they basically ran out of funds.

Thinking I want to package one of them with funchess to get an upgrade at WR. Just not sure if I want to go for that move now or wait for a couple weeks to try and up their value.
