Have a sloped back yard with two GSPs, last winter was brutal on my dormant grass. Need to so something for drainage and overall wear/tear.

Is Rye the best way to go? Any particular varieties?

Is it possible to do before a pre emergent, still put down pre em and get results? Guess that's a dumb question but curious as to what others have done. If I want grass in the winter, do I just have to bite the bullet with weeds?

Therein lies your problem. You need to apply pre-emergent done before winter weed seeds germinate for max effective control of but then cool season grasses like rye won’t effectively germinate until the soil cools to a temperature that some winter weed seeds germinate - like Poa annua.

I’d like to do the same as you but don’t b/c I place the winter weed control at a higher priority than a green winter lawn. But I’d like to hear other’s opinion - maybe I’m missing something as well - perhaps there is a brief/narrow window where this can be done.

Pre em is going to inhibit rye germination. I've played around with for shits and giggles and it never looks good.

No PRE option that is safe for ryegrass overseed. Any perennial ryegrass seed with good germ should do fine. Like everything else seed cost more this year. Ewing irrigation in W Monroe has a ‘Birdie’ that is good but $168 a bag. Tractor supply and others have perennial varieties around $92 or so a bag. Oct 15-Nov 15 optimum time for overseed. Have been pricing for baseball field I maintain for small private school. Anything having to do with turf care is going up $$$$$

two GSPs,

Badass dogs. My old man is 11 and still wants to hunt. I have to shut him down to save him from himself.

3 and 11 for us. The 11 year old is still a beast.

Lost interest in hunting them but they stay active as hell. Instincts and athleticism are incredible.

Not concerned about anything looking good. Just want something to fill in and help suck up rain during winter and avoid a mud/dirt pit in the back.

My 11 year old turned my MILs Doberman into a bird dog. He marks birds and points. I have taken him teal hunting.

We have his daughter (1.5) and she marks birds. I love our old gsp, but will probably never own another. There will never be another Durin! He ran routes around labs at the frick festival.
