Need advice on long range tv antenna
Posted by Topisawtiger on 4/29/21 at 5:12 pm00
I am looking to get rid of DirecTV but my wife insists on local TV and our internet sucks, about 5-6 on download (we are rural). So I figured an antenna for local channels would work and we have enough internet for some streaming. I am so overwhelmed with the antennas as so many seem to be giving bs range estimates. We are 55-65 miles from the local towers. Can anyone suggest a good antenna that would reach that far? Tia and have a great day.

Are your local channels VHF, UHF, or Both? Do you plan to mount it outside, on the roof, pole, how high?

Channels are both. Will mount on the roof or maybe in the attic if it will work. Thanks.

Are there any good indoor antennas?

I'm about 45 miles out and have both VHF and UHF channels. I using an antenna like the one below in the Amazon link. It's mounted outdoors on my single story chimney. The 200 miles listed is bull shite. Try it out if it doesn't work send it back or try adding an amplifier at the antenna.
amazon
I have tried a 4 bay antenna in my attic and couldn't get the VHF channels. VHF channels can be a problem.

When I cut the cable one of the first things I did was get a good OTA antenna setup. As a kid my dad had a similar setup, but without the amplifier. Where I live in St. Tammany, I am far enough from the New Orleans based tv station transmitters that I felt this type of setup was mandatory. It is mounted on the mast post from my DirectTV dish. Works great!
Based on where I turn the antenna I can receive stations from New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Hattiesburg, and Biloxi/Gulfport.
Here's the hardware I use:
Channel Master Antenna
Channel Master Amplifier
RCA Antenna Rotor and Control Box

Google antennamanpa. He is a guy in Pennsylvania that has numerous videos about cutting the cable and getting over the air channels. If you watch his videos you will a lot about antennas and how to figure out what you need and what is possible where you live.
