Shouldn't private businesses be open right now?

They are like "private" companies in Nazi Germany.

You think Volkswagen ever did anything Hitler didn't want?

If they want to use that private business excuse then I would like to start seeing brick and mortar businesses asking for addresses and turning away people from places they don't like. This would be a good way to bring a dose of reality to what the tech industry has become.

"I am not refusing you service or entry based on who you are, I am refusing you service because I am a private business and you being from ?? where people support ?? will create stress for the rest of my customers."

Does this mean private companies can serve who they wish, and tell others to get lost?

Neither are private companies. Both are public companies on the stock market. They are responsible to their shareholders and board. A private company is only responsible to it’s owner.

Private businesses make their own rules, just like private homes make their own rules. Doesn't stop govt. intervention. Right now it sucks for businesses who rely more on physical interaction/contact than those who don't, because of covid (govt.) intervention. However, completely independent of free speech issues. You can kick anyone out of your business for saying something you disagree with.

Do private homes have special protections against being sued for something a visitor does?

The answer is no.

And neither should a private business.

I don't have a clue what the differences are but I'm sure they exist as I don't come to your house to buy tires for my car.

I see people do this all the time. Not jumping your arse but I just feel the need to correct information like this when I see it because it's dangerous.

That's not what's meant by private and public. Public in the sense that you were referring to just means publicly traded. That just opens them up to SEC regulation because they have dispersed ownership through investors on the stock market and so to maintain the integrity of the system they are subject to government rules and regulations that a non publicly traded company isn't.

When speaking about private and public outside of the sphere of the stock market or in conjunction with the term 'company' or 'Corporation' then we are referring to private and public property. All companies and corporations are private in this sense. An example of public would be the fire department, land owned by local state or federal governments, your local public park, Etc.

Why a private business decide who it will serve? They forced private businesses to bake cakes when it suited them.

I dare you to kick a black person out of your business and see what happens. You'll be called a racist and bigot and your business will probably blacklisted and when the roits start, burned.
