If you compare “apples to apples”(i.e: skillet only, no lid), the price isn’t that different from the high end new pans. I’m sorry guys, I’ve cooked in Lodge for years before my first Griswold-there is no comparison IMO

Look into Finex of Portland Oregon brand cast iron. I just received some as a wedding gift. They're very nice high end cast iron. Finex

There's also Smithey Ironware out of Charleston, SC that makes a damn good product, if pricey.

Cast iron pan bottoms can be too smooth. One of the premium brands( don't remember which one) was polishing their bottoms to a near mirror finish. Problems with seasoning peeling off prompted them to back off to a rougher surface. The too smooth units were offered on Amazon at a discount price, last year as I remember.

For a good survey of the premium market, see this site: LINK /

That shite is impossible to find, at least around here. And if you do find it, it's priced waaaaaaay too high.

I've been scouring every back end of nowhere antique store and/or fleamarket I run across for the past year with no luck.

If you want smooth, why not get him a de Buyer, mineral B pans. They season just the same as cast iron and are smooth. You can find them on Amazon.

Me too, but the women may have an issue with them. I doubt any of them will wear out in my lifetime. I have some aluminum stock pots from my Grandma that I won't wear out, nor will my kids.

My wife handles our 5qt Dutch oven just fine. She didn’t see why I wanted one since we already had a large stainless and another non stick pot. Now it’s about all she cooks in for larger meals. She still leaves the cleanup to me, but the weight isn’t an issue.

Minnesota women find a cast iron pan difficult to lift, while Southern women use it as a weapon when intimidated.

BS&R are quality antiques that usually don’t carry the price tag the Griswolds do.
