Any tips/lure suggestions for fishing the South Llano River near Junction, TX?
Posted by The Last Coco on 10/15/19 at 9:29 am10
I'm headed to Junction, TX for a couple of days on Thursday and will be fishing the South Llano upriver of Junction at least a couple of times. I have some private access but will probably also use the state park to put in my kayak.
I'm a relatively experienced river fisherman, but haven't fished this river before. I'd like to catch at least a couple Guadalupe Bass, but otherwise am hoping to capitalize on the Llano's reputation for larger river largemouth.
I'll have my usual tackle assortment but didn't know if there were some specific lures I should grab before heading down. Thanks in advance for any help!

I’ve heard flipping plastic crawdads around submerged timber and rocks is pretty effective. I’d look up a local bait shop and stop by on your way in. They should know exactly what to use and water conditions

I fished the state park like 3 weeks ago. Water is low.
Caught some guad bass on a green twin tail grub thing rigged weedless with a 1/16 weight. White also seems to work well. I stay pretty small with my plastics because the bass are generally smaller. Throw it up against trees and in shade areas along the shore and you’ll catch them. I’ve had days catching 30-40 of them.

Make sure you can access the River in the state park. This time of year they do a lot of draw hunts for youth, archery, rifle, Exotics Etc. Should be able to call or find the info on texas parks and wildlife website.

This. Look up south llano canoes on facebook. Tell you want to float from 150 down to their house. Fish above and below Rapids for guads. Small spinners and small grubs. I like 2.5 inch yum crawdad on a 1/8 oz shaky head. In the slow pools throw big frogs and jigs around bank and stumps. They have some big largemouths in that river.

Thanks
And I called the state park. They confirmed it is open this weekend. They also said it is really low right now and only flowing from the springs.

You will have to drag through the rapids if you go on a float. The 2 times I fished the state park I only caught a few small fish. Up river is where you can slay em I have had multiple 80 fish days out there. If you have your own kayak put in on one of the low water crossing down hwy 377. From the 2nd one you can go up river and float back to truck

Still 45 minutes from the Llano. Hit the San Saba on the way down. Caught 4 at the bridge including a 14" and 12" Guadalupe bass for the fryer. Early returns are promising.

Nice. Any reports from junction. Thinking about hitting it or San Marcos river next weekend. Want to do a 2 day camping trip on a river while the weather is cool and the flows are low. I just got a firebox stove and want to try it out

I fished upriver of the 2nd 377 crossing yesterday and caught 25ish. Broke off a giant in a treetop. River is low and clear.
