We were fishing a blackwater hole today and we saw an orange garfish. It was about 2’ long and feeding on minnows / baitfish. Me and my buddy both tried to catch it with no luck.

I am kicking myself now for not taking pics. At the time we were fishing and staring at the thing. It was definitely a garfish and definitely orange.

My wife and I were fishing last week here in Tn at Dale Hollow Lake. I saw an orange fish near the surface that I would estimate to be about 18-24” long. I told my wife that I had seen a large gold fish.

Now that I’ve seen this thread, I’m convinced that it was a gar like this. We see a lot of gar just below the surface.

I bet some holistic company sells them, as well as some other really obscure things to Asia.

They buy the weirdest shite.

Like, you didn’t know there is a market for squirrel sinew.......but maybe it cures depression over there.

People in the aquarium world love things like this. I have been keeping fish my whole life and seen people pay. They have platinum (white as snow) they call albino but it’s probably not a true albino. Something like that would be called a leucistic and have black or blue eyes. The albino would have pink red eyes and maybe not white but a gold orange. Albinos are rare (more so in some species than others) and there are people who keep monster fish in monster tanks.

There are also wild carp/koi that are orange but I’m not sure of the salt content they can handle and if they would be in gar waters...I’d bet probably so like bass.

I’ll ask some fish people I know what is the current thought on worth of one.

Edit:

These guys are talking a few K for one.

I bet I know what you’re doing this weekend LOL

Like the other guy said, there are people who have large aquariums with large fish, including gar. An albino gar (which this is) might be worth something. You're probably not going to get rich, but you might be surprised by what some genetic morphs like this might bring, if albinos are not already common in the pet trade. I don't know much about the fish hobby, but it's the same in reptiles.
