Our TSA Pre is expiring later this year and we will probably move over to Global Entry. We already have a trip planned to Mexico in September and back to the Far East next summer so it just makes sense.

Two questions...since we already have TSA Pre, would I need to start the global process from square one or is there any method and logic behind trying to "upgrade"?

Also, my daughter (12) doesn't have TSA Pre but always gets it added when she travels with us. Does the same thing apply to Global Entry as well or will she need her own?

Every person has to have Global Entry. For example, children 12 and under can use precheck with their precheck parents, but that is not true for GE. Even a 6 month old infant has to have GE to use GE lines. I did this with my son and will do the same for my infant daughter soon.

There is no option to upgrade. You'll have to pay a full $100 GE fee to get it. It is why people say to go ahead and do GE from the start because $25 difference for people using air travel shouldn't be a big deal.

Many branded credit cards with cover the fee for the cardholder and authorized user.

Thanks...I guess I'll just let the TSA Pre expire and start the GE process for all of us. I don't THINK it's covered by any of the cards we have but I am going to look into it.

ETA...nevermind...it sure is

Love to travel but don’t like waiting in line at the airport? Look no further than TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry. Both Trusted Traveler Programs can help you skip the longer lines and make your way through the airport more quickly.

And when you use your eligible Venture, Venture X or Spark Miles card to pay for the application fee and become a member of either program, you can get a statement credit of up to $100.*

Note that will be one time every four years, so you have to pay for the others unless you have multiple cards that cover it. The credit is only good for one application/$100.

I started looking at Global Entry for us last week. Looks like only place to do interview in Louisiana is MSY and next available appointment is in August?

This

I found out first-hand last month as I renewed my Global Entry online with one of my Credit Cards and the $100 GE fee was automatically covered by the Credit Card.

I did not have to request them to cover the charge.

My new GE card showed up via US Mail less than one week later.

yeah, I saw the same thing. I was hoping Gulfport would have more appts but I don't see anything available there at all. Our trip to Mexico isn't until Sept so that should be enough time for us.

We completed the applications this morning and (so far) the dumbest thing about the whole process is that a parent cant use their account/e-mail to apply for a minor.

You can often find appointments sooner when people cancel. Or do "GE on arrival" and when you get to customs they'll do your interview on the spot, but obviously it's a bit last minute so you won't be sure they won't be too busy to fit you in.

I just did my “refresh” for GE as I was expiring. Somehow, I didn’t have to do an interview and was automatically approved. I had recently come back from international travel so maybe that contributed. I didn’t realize there was ever an auto approval option.
