Should I purchase from a place like tractor supply/cabelas or go to a local reputable dealer to purchase? If so any recommendations of a place in Houston?

Just a recommendation, but if you haven’t already decided on type of locking mechanism you may want to do that. I have a battery-powered electronic combination lock safe and a manual combination. I prefer the manual, as you don’t have any battery maintenance, etc. Both are fine, just something to consider.

Many of what are called “gun safes” do not meet the criteria to be classified as a actually safe. You need to determine what type f fire rating you need, and there are vast differences in how resistant they are to breaking in. Many of the inferior nes can be opened with a crowbar. And a fire rating sufficient for firearms my be inadequate for storing papers and digital media as people often do.

The vast majority are just residential security cabinets...
Most brands are crap, my current one is crap but it does what I need it to do, I have a Liberty. Safes the size I was looking for cost several thousands of dollars and I just needed something to keep kids out of and to deter opportunistic thievery. Even if you had a good safe pros will get into it. I like Amsec but there are others out there. Just get the Biggest costco safe available if you cheap out, that is what I did. It always varies.
I have the Fatboy Jr from Liberty and they mounted it to the floor on an exterior wall. Nothing to complain about it. I added the dehumidifier and automatic lighting to it. In the room I put it in, I definitely needed the extra lighting. Plenty of reviews on YouTube.
