Halloween would be my #1 but after that I find value in several series. Sometimes that value is nothing more than a good laugh.

Choices:

Halloween
Nightmare on Elm Street
Friday the 13th
Scream
Hellraiser
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Childs Play/Chuckie
Saw

Are there any others that you like?

Halloween 1 is a juggernaut, but it has some serious duds throughout the series.

Friday the 13th also has duds, but the general b-movie tone carries it a bit further on average.

Nightmare on Elm Street has the most interesting movies - 1, 3 and New Nightmare.

Scream is probably the most consistent - but has the smallest run at this point.

TCM - eh. 1 is fantastic but the sequels are mostly terrible, I did like the reboot however.

Saw and Child's play - meh. Hellraiser 1/2 great - but it also goes down quickly.

Rating on Influence:
Halloween
13th/Nightmare
Scream

Everything Else

Rating on Fun:
13th/Nightmare
Scream/Saw
Halloween

Everything Else

Pure Quality:
Scream/Nightmare
Halloween/13th

Everything Else

ETA: This allowed me to not pick a single one as the #1 by itself. You are welcome for the question dodge.

Eric,

While not on my personal Mt. Rushmore of slasher franchises, Wrong Turn has to be mentioned.

I’d watch Scream 1 over any wrong turn movie but I’d rather watch a Wrong Turn marathon than a Scream marathon. I can only watch ghost face stab people in the gut 5-10 times before it gets boring.

Also, I wouldn’t put Hellraiser in the slasher sub genre of horror flicks.

1. A Nightmare On Elm Street series. Highest high points with 1, 3, and New Nightmare, and the low points were still entertaining.

2. Friday the 13th series. Consistently entertaining.

3. Halloween series. 5, 6, Resurrection, and the Zombie movies really drag this one down. 1 alone should have been enough for this series to top the list, but the sequels did it no favors.

4. Scream. I know a lot of people hold the first movie in high regard, and I actually like Scream 2 fine. But 3 and 4 were snoozes.

Freaux,

Consistently boring. First one equals all timer but the rest are repetitive & come off as a paint by numbers Hollywood cash grabs.

In Scream 2-4, the kills weren’t creative or gory, no tension filled moments or chase scenes, & no one cares who is behind the ghost mask.

The sequels made a fatal error in conveniently making the people behind Ghostface somehow connected to Sidney’s past.

In Scream 2, I like the idea of the Olyphant character who is just a copycat killer. Didn’t need Billy Loomis’s mom to be the co-conspirator.

From best to worst

1. Friday the 13th
Most amount of good movies 1-4, 6, Freddy vs Jason

2. Halloween
Too many timelines, not cohesive, 1 and 2, 4, H20, 2018

3. Nightmare on Elm Street
Nancy trilogy is the best of any series 1, 3, and New Nightmare

4. Child's Play
1 and 2 are classics, 3 is decent/funny, Bride of Chucky decent

5. Scream
The original is one of the GOATs of horror, sequels are ok

6. Saw
Good series overall but gets old fast

7. Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Original and the 2003 remake are good, don't care for the others

8. Hellraiser
Never been a fan of the series at all

I get that some would not include HellRaiser as a true "slasher" but it has some pretty gory kills... I'm not a huge fan of the series though.

I can agree on Scream... 2,3,4 were all meh. Hoping the 5th will bring back a little magic.

Halloween is still my all time favorite despite the many timelines.
