I recently learned that I am going to be basically homeless for a few days later this month as some work is being done on my home.

I will be in Chicago on the 26th. I need to be in Austin by the 3rd, but I'd prefer the 1st or 2nd.

If I decide on a road trip, it would probably be from Austin, but renting a car elsewhere is an option.

I am leaning against leaving the country since the trip will be brief, and don't feel like being masked on a super long flight.

I enjoy the outdoors, museums, culture, the food scene in cities, or just relaxing on a beach.

I am at a loss for ideas.

Houston to Costa Rica is 3 hours. It costs about $300. The ride from San Jose to La Fortuna is 2 1/2 hours (Maybe $150 ) There are dozens of great hotels from cheap to Posh. Sit in one of dozens of hot springs at the base of a volcano, go for a hike, go horse back riding, drink with the friendly ticos.. Best short cheap trip ever. 5 days is perfect.

I just came back on Monday from a 2 week variation of this trip with my Venezuelan gf who live in CR. Costa Rica in general and La Fortuna specifically is amazing. You could do a different hot springs every day . I enjoyed Baldi because of the swim up bar.

If instead, you want beach and you are single head to Jaco Beach .

Costa Rica is one of my favorite vacations. There is a lot to see in the La Fortuna area. We rented a car. It was not that expensive and very easy to get around there. People are friendly and we always felt very safe.

I also endorse Costa Rica. Forget the beach. Stay at Nayara near La Fortuna. Best resort in Central America. Book zip lining, canyoning, horseback riding, etc from there.

I'll add another vote for Costa Rica, but I say go to Manuel Antonio and relax for a few days. Super easy drive from San Jose. Spend some time in the park and on the beach inside it.
