Looking to plant a tree for shade. Needs to be strong in the wind, a relatively fast grower, and won't drip sap.
Will plant between house and a power line that is about 100 feet away. Plenty of room.

Both of these are designated as Louisiana Super Plant trees

Southern Sugar Maple LINK

Willow Oak LINK This one might get larger than you ultimately want.

Yeah, shumard would be my choice.

Great leaves and fall color. Relatively fast grower.

Shumard and Cherry Bark Oaks are very nice trees. I’m surrounded by neighbors with both, as well as one with a Willow Oak, all 25+ years old. Very beautiful trees.

tupelo, gumball-less gumball tree, cow oak. all good hurricane resistance (along with live oak, cypress, and shumards oak)

Check LSU ag's site for a more comprehensive list, including bad choices

Southern Sugar Maple

This. I planted one to block the afternoon sun from my BBQ pit. It grew from 5' to 20' in just 3 years.

I inherited a sugar maple when I bought my house as the front yard showpiece. Damn thing just up and died, assuming it was planted at construction, not quite 20 years old. A beautiful tree. :waah:

Several other houses have Chinese Elms that builders planted, including my neighbor. There is a special place in Hell waiting for those people. That thing shits stuff on my roof and driveway year ‘round, and its spawn is constantly coming up in every flower bed in my yard. I have whacked every limb I can reach with a pole saw at my property line, and it is still a constant cleanup issue.

I got some kinda of oak that is growing just the other side of my fence in the neighbors yard. Watched it start growing from a foot high 20 years ago and now the fricker is over 30' high with a ton of acorns. Perfect position for shade in the afternoons. Beautiful tree.
