Do we have any hvac experts? I seem to have a shorted compressor on an older unit.

On two of the three terminals, I appear to have continuity to ground, and the system throws the breaker immediately upon turning on.

The compressor is a copeland zr45kc-pfv-135.

Also, the a-coil was updated years ago to accept the new refrigerant, so I'm guessing i can go with old or new.

What do I need to do?

***I'm not good with electrical, but I was confused about getting continuity between the two hot wires running to the compressor. The small wire going to the capacitor was fine, but the other two wires that came from the contactor showed continuity between each other.

What you're seeing is the resistance of the motor windings OR a shorted winding, depending on the resistance value.

Check from each motor leg to ground - that should be an open circuit. If it's anything but then your motor windings are shorted to ground.

No HVAC expert but this video might help you verify if you have a grounded compressor that is instantly tripping the breaker if you have the appropriate multimeter. Troubleshoot a Grounded Compressor .

If so and you have a a R-22 and R-410 compatible evaporator coil as you indicated you should be able to switch from R-22 refrigerant to R-410A with a new compressor or condensing unit. Depending on the age of the system, you might find it better to replace the entire condensing unit for a little more $ than just the compressor.

I believe this one area it’s best to have an experienced HVAC tech diagnose it for you.

Could just change out the compressor. Probably a lot cheaper.

If nothing is wrong with the condensor then you can just replace the conpressor.

It's not cheap, it's just how it is done.

If the fan motor goes out you wouldn't change the whole condensor.
