Trying to figure out some winter travel plans, flying to Durango is pretty expensive from MSY...is it possible/realistic to fly into Montrose instead and drive the two hours south on 550 to Durango? That hwy looks a little treacherous during clear weather, wondering if it gets shut down frequently in the winter.

People ski Purgatory and Silverton all winter and get there somehow. Being a major Hwy, I’m sure it’s cleared quickly after a snow. With that being said, if you’re not comfortable driving on sketchy mountain roads, aren’t able to rent a decent vehicle, or on a strict timeline, you might run into problems.

In the mountains during winter, you can either get a smooth sunny ride or have to sleep in your car. You never know.

I would fly into ABQ… don’t risk flying into Montrose and there being a snow storm where they close one or all of the mountain passes between there and Durango

550 in winter would produce a pucker factor to a flat lander. Especially south toward Silverton you're on the outside with no guardrails...add snow/ice and its a NOPE for me baw.

I just flew Durango to Baton Rouge one way. Was cheaper than to MSY.

This was mid August
