Nwla hunter. Filled 2 of 3 tags. 5.5 foot and 7 foot. First year.

Any tips for filling the last tag? Would like another 7+.

I would say to choot it or look for eyes and throw a treble hook at it. Or just take a film crew with you and have someone narrate your journey. Those guys catch multiple season-changing gators in every episode.

Hang a chicken leg on a hook somewhere and see what you have tomorrow.

So you got more gator tags than Troy gets?

If you had a boy named Amos, I could tell you what you could do.

I guess

Chicken leg quarters on a hook about 2 feet out the water is what works. I cant believe people ride around shooting rifles at alligators on the water. Its dangerous as hell.

Make a run down to Hopedale and run over them with your boat trying to find a good fishing spot.

Damn nutria are crossing canals like an Olympic swimmer trying to get across before being eaten.

No matter the size, call it a prehistoric beast and that it weighs 800 lbs, but pull it into your boat with one hand.

I learned that from swamp people.

The only way to ‘guarantee’ a bigger one is to go scout them out. In Florida we can’t use baited hooks so people bait them with meat on a wooden dowel that they swallow and then you pull them in slowly when they have swallowed it. It works, it’s a lot more tedious like fishing for catfish compared to running a jug line.

But you really just need to go scout/ hunt a bigger one out and then bait where you see them. I’d also assume if you hung the bait a certain height over the water you would more guarantee a better gator, as a smaller one couldn’t reach it.

Scout for a big one and only set your lines where u see a big one. Set your line high about 2 ft or so.
Not sure where you hunting but look on google earth and find some land locked pond or a trennasse that is almost closed off on one end. U prolly not gonna catch a big boy in the easy spots because they were all caught when they were 5-7ft like you caught them.

I would wager if he only has 3 tags he is on a wma or coe land hence treble hooking not kosher.

his best bet, is to GO SCOUT and find a bigun.

Yeah, the do tend to fudge on the weights of the gators they catch. That 12 footer they caught yesterday that is blamed for killing that 71 yr. old man after Ida weighed in under 600 lbs., but on "Swamp People" those announcers will claim it weighed 1000 lbs.

Same with the show where Troy and Co. go to Florida to catch pythons in the Everglades. According to them, a 10 ft. Burmese Python weighs around 125 lbs., but there's Troy and Co. using one hand to put them in the sacks and then tossing them over their shoulders like it's nothing.

Hand chicken leg quarter higher off the water. Higher = bigger (usually)
